CBN NEWS – A Christian businessman in Egypt will go on trial this week for insulting Islam.
Naguib Sawiris recently posted a picture of a bearded Mickey Mouse and a veiled Minnie on his Twitter account.
Sawiris, a Coptic Christian and a billionaire, has been a champion of secularism and has spoken out against the growing influence of Islamic fundamentalism.
He said he tweeted the picture as a joke, saying that if Islamists came to power in Egypt, even cartoon characters would have to dress conservatively.
Sawiris later apologized, but a Muslim lawyer filed a formal complaint against him.
An Egyptian human rights activist said the country’s blasphemy laws have been used to punish scholars and activists who anger Muslims.
