Bill Ayers makes appearance at Occupy Chicago

Is it surprising?  Of course not. The Occupy movement has drawn the fringiest, most radical the left has to offer.  With the Communist Party also in attendance (and receiving a standing ovation), it’s only fitting that Ayers join in on the fun and host a “Teach-in.”  Inevitably, the question of whether or not violence was an appropriate means to the Occupy end arose.  Who better to ask than the guy who tried to blow up the Pentagon? Ayers provided the perfect contradictory answer:

Question: Would you say a nonviolent revolution is successful or would you say at some point in time, in order to have a real revolution, violence is necessary?

Ayers: What I would say is different than that, what I would say is violence is built in. Do I think you should resort to violence? Absolutely not. You should use your brilliance, your humor, your wisdom, your body to dramatize the violence that exists.  But we do not live in a neutral – not when there’s a one trillion dollar military budget, the biggest in the world.  Not when they’re recruiting kids to be in the service, not when every athletic event begins with guns and marching – that’s a violent culture and that’s where we live.
