Once again Bill Kristol is pushing the idea that Republicans should cave on raising upper rates if they get a good enough deal, and in this case he’s arguing that if Democrats agreed to make the other 98% of Bush tax cuts permanent, then it would be a huge victory for Republicans even if they have to concede raising the upper rates.

But Krauthammer hits back saying that as a matter of policy raising upper rates does nothing for our catastrophic deficits, that it’s just a political attack by Obama and Republican shouldn’t play that game.

Watch:

At the end of the show tonight, Krauthammer ribbed Kristol saying he is turning into a socialist. Watch it here.

Bill Kristol....I'm not in that fortunate class of 2%, however, having said that, I think your rationalization is stupid. In our country, everybody should have a little skin in the game, REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH OR HOW LITTLE you have or earn. EVERYBODY should contribute, including that 47% who are on the government take! By the way, Bill, would either you or obama, please, just define what amount is my fair share?

I am finding myself inclined to agree with Kristol. I know it is against our principles to do that, but I just don't see another way at this point. Obama has to completely own his policies and what they will do to the economy. The why is simple. The voting public kicked our ass. I am thinking the Republicans have to just step aside and let Obama have whatever he wants. Their theme should be: We don't agree with you, but the people have spoken. We won't fight you.

Send us whatever legislation you want and we will put it to a vote. You will get a lot of votes of 'PRESENT' but the legislation will pass. You want a middle class tax decrease. OK. You don't want to reign in spending? We don't agree, but we won't fight you on it. You think a tax increase on the rich will solve our deficit problems, send it along. We don't agree but we will not fight you.

It appears to me that this panel consistently has only one conservative on it and three liberals. Fox needs to get their crap together, because I can watch liberals spew nonsense on several other major networks. I can't watch any of these panels that are overwhelmingly loaded with lefties - including Kristol. He's no conservative. Enough already. Let's get some other minds on these panels and get rid of that NPR lady, Juan Williams, Bill Kristol. There are far greater minds we can hear from.

I say, we raise the rates on political pundits, politicians, and Hollywood activists. Leave everyone else alone. What do you bet the political pundits, politicians, and Hollywood activists would say that is just plain garbage and totally discriminatory?

Charles is correct.. All the republicrats, need to do is let The Big O own it all ! The cliff is the cliff when we are all at the bottom of it maybe then the idiots that voted the clown in will find out that " Santa Claus Obama" killed all the elves that made it all happen for them..

Bill Kristol has a point.. unfortunately its at the top of his head ! He is a moderate and always be a moderate, Strictly saying a Republicrat.

Its time for the rise of the " Conservative Party " The Republicans are no better than the Democrats except they don't lie as much. And the Democrats have a stronger backbone than the wussies we have in Washington.

2014 needs to be the year that The conservative party makes inroads.. All the pundits say that splitting the party or splitting the vote is bad, Well from what I am seeing in Washington what we have now "Stinks to High Heaven" something has got to give.

Let the Bush Tax Cuts expire and then the Republicans can go about doin real tax reform. Bush like all Liberals made the Tax Code even more progressive to where 50% of the American people don't pay Federal income taxes.

The Bush Family has been a disaster for the Republican Party and this country.

John Scotus

The thing is, they are both right. Taxing the wealthy at a higher rate will not help with the deficit. On the other hand, Obama carried their vote and so they effectively voted for a tax increase for themselves, so it is hard to get worked up on the issue of raising their taxes. While raising any taxes would hurt the GOP with conservatives, it is important to note that protecting the wealthy from tax increases has been a political disaster with everyone else. Maybe it is time to give in on this issue, if something indeed can be guaranteed in return.

To put things in perspective, while the Reagan tax cuts were instrumental in reviving the economy in the 1980s, Reagan also raised taxes several times during his two terms. Is he to be regarded as a RINO? Or, does his example suggest that at times conservatives should show a little bit more flexibility and give in on 20% to 30% in order to get 80% to 70%, rather than settling for nothing and losing votes in the bargain?

I agree 100% John Scotus.

First, let me state that raising taxes on the rich will do little for the debt. Second, I am generically against raising taxes on anybody. Thirdly, I understand and somewhat agree with the starve the beast theory.

However, if we actually could get something REAL and important for it, you bet I would raise the rates for millionaires. The country wants it. It hurt the Republican party in 2012. And its the one thing being pounded home by the Democrats. Sometimes you have to give something to get something. Even if its stupid and bad for the country. Its only a question of whether you get more then you gave.

Now my request is to bring discretionary spending back to 2008 levels. REAL cuts. If they gave me that, I would give them the higher rates for the wealthy. My concern is the national debt. This will help the debt. So I would do that. Who here wouldn't?

Now the key thing to understand is that I know the Dems would never cut discretionary spending immediately back to 2008 levels. So my offer wouldn't even be done. But it would be solid cover politically. We gave them what they wanted and they refused what we wanted. Thats solid cover and the media couldn't play the populist class warfare crap on us. Obama would own the cliff much more then he does now. And if I am not mistaken, taxes are going up either way.

Of course, the problem with my offer is that Boehner and McConnell don't really want to cut spending. They don't give a crap about the deficit. So screw them all. Let it burn.

You're not playing out everything all the way through:

1. GOP refuses to extend tax cuts for middle class

2. taxes for middle class go up on Jan 1

3. Obama travels around country saying "if the Republicans send a bill to my desk to lower taxes for the middle class I'll sign it today...but they are slaves of the extremists in the tea party and their masters on Wall St and won't lower taxes for regular folks even though they always vote for tax cuts for the rich!"

4. MSM is on Obama's side and polls show Americans overwhelmingly side w/ Obama

5. Republicans cave, but have their reputation permanently damaged anyway...or don't cave and are wiped out in the mid-terms.

So you see, your solution doesn't provide any political cover at all. The truth is O has all the cards. It's not even close.

What I'd probably do? Let the tax cuts expire, then let the Ds raise them on the top 2% w/ the Rs voting "present". Explain to the People that raising taxes w/ out spending controls makes no sense, like giving money to a junkie, hoping it will go to food, but it will only go to drugs. Explain doing it during a slow economic period can cause a recession.

That way you avoid the trap, but the Ds own whatever happens to the economy.

Most of the people on this thread though, killing Cristol, are not in touch w/ political reality at all, and are probably pretty good examples of why we've lost the popular vote in five of the last six Presidential elections.

The fact that people think for even a second that we can win on this issue is sheer lunacy. Just ridiculous!

Note: I'm talking only about the Bush tax cuts here. We have some cards to play as far as the automatic medicare and military cuts etc.

Juan Williams and Bill Kristol are oblivious to the fact that when the government says anything about dealing with taxes, those of us who have an income in the brackets not affected by their meddling, we end up being affected.

Its like Joe Pesci's character in the movie Lethal Weapon 2 and what he said about ordering at the drive through of a fast food restaurant. You'll get screwed every time.

JeffWRidge
JeffWRidge

The middle class tax cuts are not only not permanent, the taxes paid by the middle class will increase as soon as it becomes obvious to even lefties that tax increases on the wealthy won't fix the problem. Once they admit that, then they'll want to increase taxes on the middle class. It's the lefty way.

People who are currently considered middle class will soon find themselves being called rich and stingy, to get the ever growing numbers of poor people to support higher taxes on them.

Although I will stipulate that I have zero hope for the FairTax at the moment, as long as we have different tax rates for different income levels, we will always have bickering over what is "fair." A national retail sales tax on consumption would go a long way towards putting this issue behind us. It would be fair, transparent and simple. Although I hate the word "Fair," it would be as close to "fair" as we could get because it would treat everyone EXACTLY the same.
