Jesus never placed the burden of caring for others on government; it is the individual's job.
Jesus never authorized theft – not by a person, not by Caesar, not by modern government. What government sees as legal (take from those who earned it and give to those who didn't) is nevertheless morally wrong according to the teachings of the bible: “Thou shalt not steal.”
Your “friend” is confused.

“Capitalism isn’t working in the real world”
No doubt she lives in a cardboard box, and eats wafers at the local welfare office.
But she can afford the computer and the monthly Internet fees can't she? - Maggie
I would have simply responded: “Too long; didn't read”.

Throughout the Bible (remember Ruth as one example) poor people worked to eat. Boaz certainly could have just told his workers to keep out some grain and GIVE it to Ruth and her MIL–but he didn't.
Lucy said: “It is harder for a rich man to enter in the Kingdom of Heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.” Hard to spin that one in your favor, I’m afraid. The point is not to get rich, and getting rich will not make a man happy. Getting rich does not effectively “better” anyone’s circumstances.” Wow, talk about twisting interpretation. Jesus was not castigating the wealthy but rather using that illustration to castigate those of that day who thought they could “buy” salvation. Jews believed that if they bought “alms” it would buy them salvation and the more money–the more alms they could buy, the more assured they were of earning salvation. I'd start there . . . I have to get back to work–didn't finish her long expository
commentary yet. - LPARA
Oh, and my husband reminded me that there are quite a few “rich” people in the Bible –Solomon (richest man ever in the world) Job, Abraham–all important Biblical characters who God BLESSED and who are EXAMPLES to us through His inspired Word. (duh)

The revulsion I feel on reading Lefty's post is that her highest stated virtue is Helplessness. That only by being without plan or action are people “higher” beings. Only by being part of a Mob is action possibly good. And any example (read: person) contrary to the ideology must be destroyed to help them. Pure evil.

One more thing.
“willing to judge, condemn, slander, and ignore the reality of the suffering ” of others is what I would call freedom of the suffering to refuse help. Saying eating out costs more $ than homecooking to someone with limited $ is judgemental. Using good judgement to find a solution to their problem is a gift, not indifference. - charlesmiller
A couple of thoughts. Why is “capitalism” equated with being “sinfully rich”? I simply wish to work hard enough and earn enough to comfortably support my family. If God blesses me with more then I am thankful. If my enterprise fails, it is still my lot to thank God and be ever watchful for the next door that he opens. It is, after all, His will that I wish for my life more than anything – and I know that He will bless me when I find it and follow it. According to Mathew, I know that God will adequately provide for me… at least provide me the means to live adequately. If I am blessed with more than I consume, then it falls to me to be charitable to those less fortunate. Having the government redistribute wealth is not charity… giving through force is theft and is the opposite of charity. If you are unable to keep what you earn, you are deprived of being able to receive the blessing that being charitable brings.
Remember – I'm not talking of being wealthy here – only the top 1%-5% of the population is considered wealthy – yet more than 80% of the population is employed by entrepreneurs (capitalists) who are looking to try to earn a comfortable living.
Working for what you receive gives you a sense of satisfaction and/or accomplishment – receiving a reward without having earned it leaves you with an empty feeling – remember: a laborer is worthy of his hire. Consider this: if you financially support someone; what incentive do they have to go out and find work for themselves? By supporting them, you create dependency and rob them of a basic Christian blessing.
I have had a friend on Facebook, who I’ll call Lefty Lucy, who blocked me today for my ‘controversial’ views. One quick note is that we’ve gone to the same church before, so we believe in the same Jesus, which is awesome. Now the back story is that Lefty Lucy went to see the latest Moore fabrication and loved it. Well, I felt the need to share with Lucy how the mortgage crisis really started, regarding govt intervention and social engineering, and I put out the premise that the hard Left is trying to overwhelm our economy by creating more dependency on the govt than we can afford (yes, I know Republicans spent too much too, but I was trying to make a point). I also pointed out that capitalism is the best chance for a man to better his circumstances and that is what the hard Left is attacking. Well I woke up this morning and it had all been deleted. Ok. Then I checked my inbox:
I just thought I should let you know that I am praying for you to lose everything you have by forces which you cannot control. This is for the sake of your soul’s conversion to Christ. Fair warning.Blessings of the poor,
Lefty Lucy
Well that was news to me, because I do know Jesus and love Him very much. But I do defend capitalism, and apparently that’s where we separate. So I wrote back:
I certainly appreciate the sentiment Lucy. And correct me if I am wrong, but are you suggesting that I am not a christian because I think capitalism is the best chance for a man to better his circumstances?
You are wrong. It is because you are willing to judge, condemn, slander, and ignore the reality of the suffering of other people, the poor, in order to protect and maintain that belief. Which means that you have lost your sense of God in the worship of a golden calf, quite literally, the idol of capitalism. You cannot let other people suffer and die at the hands of a system, ignore their voices but rather twist their stories to blame them for their circumstances under some bullshit concept of “personal responsibility” simply because you want to believe it is the right one, or more accurately, because it has worked out well for you so far, and claim to know the living God. This is exactly like the Pharisees, like Saul. There is a lot in the Bible where Jesus is speaking directly to people with ignorant, self-righteous, and destructive attitudes such as yours. The bulk of his teaching is devoted to it actually. It’s really hard to miss. You should read the Gospels. He doesn’t go light on them, friend. “It is harder for a rich man to enter in the Kingdom of Heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.” Hard to spin that one in your favor, I’m afraid. The point is not to get rich, and getting rich will not make a man happy. Getting rich does not effectively “better” anyone’s circumstances. Therefore, because one percent of the population gets rich, and the rest of us are working our asses off at two or three jobs and can barely pay our rent/mortgage or feed ourselves…um, no, that’s not a better life. The majority of the population can’t meet the basic needs in order to even begin thinking about life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. Capitalism is an individualist system, breaking apart communities so the masses, separated from one another, can be stomped on. WAKE UP. Capitalism isn’t working in the real world. Forget about your test tube theories of “it would work if only…” and look around and outside of yourself for God’s sake. Or maybe you can’t. I have tried to talk to you about this before and you have shown that you have no intention of giving up your idols for the sake of Christ. I have dealt with many different kinds of addicts, and this is one of the worst addictions I think I have ever seen. How lost can one soul be? I am just giving you over to His care. And so yes I hope to God you lose everything that you have, so that you will see from the eyes of the least of these. It is the only thing that will save you from yourself I think, give you the freedom from having to look for evil and blame in other human beings, and instead allow you to see the face of God. This I pray for you.
Well I was going to respond, but before I could even put together a reasonable reply I was blocked on Facebook by this friend. To be honest, I wasn’t even sure where to start before I found out I couldn’t. So instead of responding to what appears to be a grave misunderstanding of capitalism, I decided to post this for your entertainment. Feel free to comment on how you would reply to this. I think it would be quite interesting to see where you would start.
