Chris Christie defends Sohail Mohammed nomination; says “this Sharia law business is crap”

Chris Christie held a press conference yesterday, during which he answered a few questions about his controversial nomination to the New Jersey Superior Court, Sohail Mohammed. Not surprisingly, he strongly defended the pick.

But let’s remember why this nomination has raised a few eyebrows among some conservatives. It’s not simply because of Mohammed’s religion, per se. Rather, Mohammed has disconcerting ties to groups affiliated with radical outfits such as Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, and as a lawyer has defended numerous Muslim terror suspects. Is it xenophobic to ask what the deal is with all that? Furthermore, Sharia law is an issue that has cropped up in several American courts recently, including in New Jersey. As a judge, don’t we want to know what Mohammed’s view is of Sharia law, as it applies to the American legal system?

For Christie to dismiss these valid concerns as “crap” strikes me as a head-in-the-sand mentality in a post-9/11 America. I like Christie a lot, and hope Mohammed turns out to be a fine judge, but I gotta say I’m scratching my head on this one.
