Stewart couldn’t see the logical fallacy of his positions. Here’s one of the more glaring inconsistencies:
S: It’s ridiculous to think that Christianity is under attack in the US today.
B: I can cite a list of cases longer than both your arms where it is.
S: But you win those cases, so there’s no threat. (You’re paranoid.)
B: But we had to defend against the attacks in court in order to win them.Stewart is basically saying that Barton should stop defending against the attacks since he is always successful in fending those attacks off. Huh?
- http://twitter.com/ozziecastillo The Wizard of Oz
He also wouldn’t let Barton finish his points and cite the support for his case, and he just wouldn’t accept that the constitution protects religion from the government.
It was really annoying as an interview actually, especially at first. It felt like he kept lobbing underhanded insults.
I am glad that the interview was long, could have gone another hour.

I agree. I think Stewart came off as a defensive A-hole. Well, more of an A-hole than usual.
- Mensaman62
I also agree. Let the man answer the question without interruption. David Barton is great.
- http://www.planettron.com NickDeringer
I checked out Barton and he’s a solid guy. He’s won awards and lots of recognition for his work. He is a great spokesman for our country and the values that make it great.
Stewart looks like he genuinely respects Barton and so does the audience. Bravo to Barton.
- http://twitter.com/klejdys Klejdys aka Gamblor
Stark how far we’ve come from the Founders interpretation of the 9th & 10th Amendments and where we are today. Shocking. Barton is a treasure – honest, knowledgable and informative.
You’re right – Stewart definitely leaves impressed with his store of knowledge.

Did David Barton really say that it would be alright if Dearborn, Michigan established Sharia law within its jurisdiction? That’s absolutely ridiculous.
- http://www.therightscoop.com/ therightscoop
No he didn’t say that.
- Anonymous
Yes he did. Last video, 8:25 mark.
- http://www.therightscoop.com/ therightscoop
I don’t believe he meant above the law though where it conflicts with US law. But admittedly I am extrapolating based on what I know of him.
- Anonymous
I think I know exactly what he was getting at. He’s a purist. As all legal minds should be. It goes back to his line about “pulling up your big boy pants”. I loved that because it’s so true and it gets to the heart of what liberals can’t understand.
People like Barton don’t assume people need the state to protect them from peer pressure.
- http://twitter.com/ozziecastillo The Wizard of Oz
“pulling up your big boy pants” I’m glad he said it, although Stewart deserved a little harsher criticism.
I was thinking “grow a pair” or “act like you have a set” during that part of the interview. Thick skin is a requirement of life—
- Poptoy1949
Scoop is correct on this one.
- Pauline
I will listen to that point but think it was taken out of context. I have read Barton’s work and it does not seem like something her would say…
- K~Bob
Barton was agreeing to Stewart’s general point about allowing mosques and community schools to practice their religion, and Stewart threw that bit about sharia in there very fast, as a run-on clause, spoken at lower volume (running out of breath and hurrying to his next point) at the end of his main sentence, at which point Barton was primed to get to his chance to speak.
Barton said “yes” to the whole bungle, to throw it aside so he could try to make a point. But the speed of the conversation, and Stewart’s ability as host to direct, divert, and interrupt, did not allow Barton time to clarify or revisit.
He certainly did not bring up sharia himself. You’d have to edit that passage hard to make it seem like Barton truly meant to agree with sharia law. Besides, to “call” Barton on it without asking him first to clarify would be inconsistent with seeking the truth. Absent that, it’s reasonable to assume the answer lugina15′s question is a simple, “not intentionally.”
(Folks who refuse to discern freedom of religious practice from sharia, on the basis that Islam does not recognize such a division, are engaging in futility. In Western culture, law is a separate discipline, separate function of society, and maintains a separate infrastructure, vs. religion and religious practice. Religious people may make laws, but the practice of doing so by pointing to religious dictates is one that is no longer followed. So Barton can be correct in speaking of allowing the Muslims to follow their faith, while not–as I imagine he meant–agreeing to their use of sharia where it conflicts with law in the United States.)
- K~Bob
I didn’t put those extra carriage returns in there. Hmmm.
- http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=504624590 Chris G.
As long as the local gov’t of Dearborn doesn’t violate the Constitutions of the US or State of Muchigan, they can practically do what they please. I have no problem w/ that, ‘cuz I don’t have to live there — & if I did, I could either get involved in changing the law as a resident of Dearborn or MOVE.
- Pauline
No, Barton would never say that….

There is one thing I’ve learned in the last couple of years of listening to Mark Levin and is that everything I assumed about the Constitution was wrong.
See, liberals like Stewart, no matter how much he thinks he knows about the founding and how many books he’s read about it, is operating under a flawed assumption. It’s hard to articulate. But the Constitution doesn’t do what he thinks it does. It never has. We liberals are so programmed to think anything left to he states is bad. It’s hard to grasp the idea that the Constitution has nothing to do with the states. Not until some court says it does. I can’t explain it. Listen to Mark Levin.
As far as this interview goes: Jon Stewart is so hostile to religion during this entire interview he doesn’t even know it. He didn’t want to hear what Barton had to say. He kept cutting him off. He wouldn’t look him in the eye. But that’s how liberals are.
- KeninMontana
@Jaynie59:disqus If you are a reader(I am going to assume you are) and are interested in learning more about the Constitution, these are indispensable, Justice Joseph Story’s Commentaries on the Constitution;
http://books.google.com/books?id=VZQPBIhVPsMC&printsec=titlepage#v=onepage&q&f=false
These three books are considered the most exhaustive works on interpreting the document. Considering Justice Story was Dane Professor of Law at Harvard ,it boggles my mind that any Liberal could attend Harvard Law and still come out a Liberal on the Constitution.
- Straight2TheeAce
Christians are thee one and only group in the world right now in which people feel like they can freely attack at will with no retaliation. It is wrong and the best part of that speech was let Holy Ghost have his way because the people who truly love Jesus are tired of “religion which religion is the need to be or do things the right way over the need to love.
- justawhoaman
Christians have been tortured and condemned since the word “Christian” was defined… as evidenced first, by Christ, then all of his apostles. It is no wonder, however, that it is still the most practiced of all religions as our souls are redeemable through Him.
It is time to stand up for Him and not bow meekly in confrontation with Satanic ideologies. Fear not.
I regret that Jon Stewart has strayed so far from his origins. He truly has much to fear.
- Anonymous
“It is time to stand up for Him and not bow meekly …”
The meek shall inherit the earth. What makes you think he needs your help?
- JoeintheHole
Yeah, so true. Especially when Muslims try and burn copies of the Bible on 9/11…Oh wait…
- soberminded
And by the way, Stewart threw in that the Bible has contraditions….no, God does not contradict himself, thank you.
- Anonymous
“God does not contradict himself, thank you.”
Yeah, but the Bible does. Starting with two different Genesis accounts. Gets worse from then on. “Though shalt not murder”, tell that to the Midians or the Canaanites.
- Anonymous
I would so like to debate you on this but it is not the time or place to do so.
I will say this – I learned a long time ago that it takes much research into original languages and to other bibical scriptures to answer my skeptical questions.
IMHO The Bible has no REAL contridictions – just surface ones that with research and study (and lots of time) become very explainable.
- Anonymous
The bible has more contradictions than someone with a life has time to count, but if you’ve read the bible cover to cover you’ll understand the simple reason why. It is an accounting of history. The Old Testament shows a way of living, dealing with problems with family members and friends, really a whole set of rules to live by, including giving sacrifices to gain grace in the eyes of God. THEN comes Jesus in the new testament, who says a lot of “You have heard it said” then “but I say to you now”‘s. Some were a conformation that things were the same, some were announcements that things are different now. We no longer give sacrifices to please the Lord. There is no longer anyone between us and the Lord. A non-Christian could say these are conflicts, I know Jesus changed things. The U.S. History books, conflict, change or flip-flop? It’s all in how you want to view it.
- http://geopolicy.wordpress.com Tony
Stewart sucks… He got owned… Maybe now he will keep his lil mouth shut and let the intellectuals delve into history… Stewart just tell jokes u clown.
- http://geopolicy.wordpress.com Tony
Jeez Stewart is such an idiot… Just had to state that in a second post.
- http://geopolicy.wordpress.com Tony
Stewart talks about evidence, meanwhile Barton says he has 100,000 documents. Stewart HE HAS THE EVIDENCE… NOT YOU! STEWART YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE EVIDENCE HE HAS!!
Get a friggin clue stewart… DANG
- http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=504624590 Chris G.
THANK YOU so much for posting this interview, RS! To be honest, I thought it was a lil beneath Mr. Barton to appear on TDS, but hopefully he edumacated a few people about the truth of our nation’s Christian history…& that is definitely a GOOD thing!
- http://profiles.google.com/jsalexander100 Justin Alexander
I can’t understand why there’s resentment toward Jon Stewart, he conducts fair interviews and often has people from the other side (Cantor, Huckabee, Rick Perry, Ken Blackwell, Rumsfeld…) This interview w/ Barton was a fine example of Stewart’s fairness. Can’t wait to see Beck and/or Palin on… I won’t hold my breath though.
- Berk
Lovely to check out a right wing site before I go to a left wing elitist university at a left wing elitist west coast (not as elitist as east coast, but still). I have to say you right wingers do live in your own fantasies. Stewart’s last words about that interview were: “I just ran a marathon, from all different directions, and ended up exactly where I started.” So in other words, his disagreement with Barton remains the same. You see, Stewart always seems respectful because that’s who he is. He disagrees but he’s a polite Jewish (aka non-Christian) man.
PS: It might come across as a surprise to y’all but I don’t do drugs or alcohol or any stuff of a night life, but I do think people are allowed some choices in their lives.
I also like to see if my comments get posted, though it might be of epsilon probability. - http://www.envisionliberty.weebly.com/ Mike Leavitt
It would be nice if John Stewart and his ilk invoked The Constitution as often as Stewart did in this interview. And was it just me, or was he trying to use a “literalism” argument for his point? Can we use the same argument when it comes to funding NPR or Planned Parenthood? “The founders were pretty direct in their writing, if they wanted abortions paid for by taxpayers wouldn’t they have put it in the founding document?”
- Cary6112
Any chance Stewart could SHUT-UP long enough (let’s say… 1 minute) to actually let a guest from the Right finish an answer?
- http://twitter.com/ozziecastillo The Wizard of Oz
Nope, this one was too scary for him to confront- he really just didn’t want to hear it. I’ll bet he thought he was going to go to town on Barton, and it turned out the other way.
- Pauline
Barton, is brilliant. He loves America and has respect for our Constitution.
Steward is a smucky liberal idiot Jewish guy, more concerned about elevating his ratings than helping America thrive.
- RecoveredDemoholic
David Barton on Glenn Beck: America’s Black Founding Fathers
would write more of my esteem for Mr. Barton, but decided to watch the videos again.
- BigM
This is interview is a classic David & Goliath gone bad for David [i.e.Jon Stewart] Lol. Every stone he through at Barton seem to just bounce right off! Every one of them!! I think Stewart was very humbled after this interview and now knows never to invite Barton on his show again….lol. Great interview.
Barton is the epitome of the statement: “Know what you believe, and believe what you know”
He’s absolutely unshakable!

Barton is the epitomy
- http://twitter.com/ozziecastillo The Wizard of Oz
I actually think Stewart is interested in information and learning, but the religion thing is really gives him a blindspot. He’ll probably ponder it and dig deeper if he’s honest with himself. Usually if I get upset or lose my cool out of frustration, in a debate, I’ll think about it and examine if my position was as honest as it could be—-If I’m wrong, I’ll reconsider the facts.
- BigM
I agree OZ. he did seem to have a sincere desire to come to a point of understand. However, Barton was always there with the answer he didn’t want to hear. If he had only allowed Barton complete his points, he may have come to a point of understanding, but his eagerness got the best him.
- Frederick
I rather enjoyed that back & forth. The one at the end of this discourse, who I believe would be the one, in private reflection, to be more apt to reconsider anything, is Jon. David is not scatching his head over this I assure you.
- http://twitter.com/wbcsaint Sam R
I love David Barton and Rick Greene and all the other folks at Wallbuilders. I have had the opportunity to see Rick talk on several occasions and he is just as good as David in explaining the history and how it needs to be reclaimed. I applaud David for going on with John Stewart. For as faux a news show as Stewart runs there are a lot of folks that truly turn to him for their news and having David on their to explain his position and put to rest the misinformation being spread was wonderful.
- shorthorn
I get sucked into listening to Stewart and every time he will not let his guest finish a damned sentence. Stewart is addicted to the sound of his own voice.
- K~Bob
The short version:
Barton: “I can give you a ton of examples.”
Stewart: “But anyone can come up with an example.”
The old, “I don’t have to look at your data,” method of argument.
Thanks for posting this, @TRScoop
! - Perplexed
Wow. I really don’t know how anyone could have watched the entire interview thinking Jon Stewart was impressed with David Barton, who was manic and completely incoherent. I can see how he’s won people over through sheer force of will, but how can he be lauded as a historian, or be taken seriously by real lawyers and judges? Many people can memorize and quote facts, but obviously not everyone is intelligent enough to have a discussion…
- http://twitter.com/ozziecastillo The Wizard of Oz
“Many people can memorize and quote facts”
If the information is factual, then what are you opposed to?
- Perplexed
Quoting facts to divert attention away from actual questions is well documented, all over the political spectrum. One name for the practice is the Gish Gallop
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Gish_Gallop
It should be pointed out that while Mr. Barton may accurately reference historical documents, he cannot accurately assess the opinions contained therein which he frequently refers to as facts.
- Poptoy1949
Stewart talked himself in submission. I think he learned something but did not like the lesson. We shall see……
- Josie
After listening to this whole interview I wonder why Jon Stewart bothered having a guest speaker and not allowing him to speak. Stewart did most of the speaking or more accurate lecturing. Too bad he missed a perfect opportunity to learn something from Barton and enter reality.
I must say I was quite shocked to see David Barton on The Daily Show last night debating Jon Stewart on various things surrounding the idea that we are a Christian nation. While their discussion at times seemed to go all over the place, the one thing that stands out is that Stewart seemed to have some of his facts wrong regarding the ‘offenses’ that Barton has been accused of by the Left. He would suggest that Barton had done something only to find out something quite different from Barton himself. Even on the issue of Congress having a Bible printed for use in schools Stewart had his facts wrong at which point Barton, quoting chapter and verse, set the record straight.
All in all this is a very interesting interview where I feel like Stewart ended up with a much higher respect for Barton in the end.
Enjoy!
