“We got hosed.”

That’s what my husband said to me last month as his unit struggled to keep their mission going due to the new Obama Defense cuts. They’ve made do with less (and sometimes nothing) for the last three years but the new cuts are really impacting his mission.

When you’re the wife of a “True Blue” Airman, you know that The Mission comes above everything else. You know that anniversaries and birthdays will be missed because The Mission must be completed. You keep odd hours, constantly monitoring all lines of communication because he’s out there somewhere saving the world, doing The Mission he was assigned to do. And you watch in utter horror as The Mission that your husband worked so hard for and is so vital to the country is laid on the altar of political opportunity.

The military’s portion of the 2011 budget (4.3% for wars and 14.4% for the DoD) seems small in comparison to the entitlements (60.9%) that dominate the rest of the national budget. Yet it seems that the military’s budget is always the first to be criticized, maligned, and put on the chopping block. The comfort of Baby Boomers is put ahead of the needs of the young men and women fighting for our nation. The military is now cutting 67,100 troops at a time when we need their service more than ever.

We don’t fight wars like we used to, that’s for sure.

With new technology and asymmetrical warfare, it’s doubtful we’ll ever see something like World War II ever again. But some things just haven’t changed in the Air Force (known as the Army Air Corps back then). We still need highly-trained and motivated Airmen to operate equipment and give air support. For every “pointy end” of the spear, there’s a “shaft” of support behind it and someone’s got to decide where that spear will do the most damage. These Airmen need to constantly keep up on their training and be supported as they serve 6-12 month deployments.

Obama and his liberal minions want to cut that support. Their simultaneous proposals of new unconstitutional wars and special forces deployments while slashing the budget and feeding our troops lettuce is pure cognitive dissonance. The Bush-era mantra of “support the troops, not the war” has completely broken down as the Obama administration goes after not only the monetary support of the troops but also their morale; as certain policies are implemented in an attempt to unravel the moral fabric of the greatest military on the face of this earth.

In three years our military has taken a lot of friendly fire, drawing many comparisons to the home front of the Vietnam War. But there is hope. Missions have been completed and wrapped up (bin Laden, Iraq, and countless others that won’t be publicly known for decades) and the military hangs on, pushing forward for the nation’s survival. And the American people keep supporting our military with care packages, town-organized parades, and genuine thanks when they see our troops in uniform.

Don’t let the military take this flak on their own. The fiscal wreck that this country is in does not need to be fixed by sacrificing our Constitutional mandate to defend it. We need to support plans like Representative Ryan’s that fix the entitlements that are drowning us in deficits and the loopholes that make our tax code incomprehensible. Cutting readiness now means we’ll pay for it later, as the Global War on Terror proved.

Hold politicians accountable when they promise to support the military! And when you get overwhelmed, remember the immortal words of someone in my husband’s unit: “This is America, damn-it!”

Ron Paul is like that mouthy friend you occassionally go to a bar with. Sure, he pays the tab but he also gets YOU punched in the mouth 'cause he doesn't get why telling a big drunk biker to screw off is a bad idea.

That's right. Stop foreign aid and stop giving illegals free medical treatment and knock off food stamps and unemployment benefits for life.

No, you are missing the point. Every nickel spent of our military is well spent and a bargain. We need to stop giving money to Paki, Afghani, and all those other countries run by muslim despots.

grizzlybear71
grizzlybear71

OK, that's fine. But to spend that prolifically on defense, we need to cut spending substantially elsewhere...such as in the federal bureaucracy and entitlements. The guy who most here seem to support as the person to get that done (Santorum) has a record of doing just the opposite while a member of the Senate...he voted to raise the debt "ceiling" five times and to create the biggest unfunded entitlement (Medicare Part D) since LBJ.

MiketheMarine
MiketheMarine

No, Jay. Your boy in the "House" has been giving billions of actual US dollars to the bad guys, trying to buy their best behavior and putting those dollars on the DOD budget. Our troops don't see that cash. He is giving away the farm to the enemy and blaming it on the good guys. He is a criminal and I believe he is the enemy too.

Sadly, it is inevitable. And all you Paul supports need to recognize that if he were to win, he will accellerate WWIII.

Hoorah. Yep, that's Marines for you. They remove the word "can't" from your vocabulary very early on in training.

??? Give me a break on the whole 'high taxes thing...' You know that all the entitlement crap is what is driving our deficit and debt. It's not defense spending. Defense as a part of the GDP is not nearly as large (and growing) as entitlements and you know it.

I'll repeat: Defense is one of the very few things the Constitution allows the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to spend dollars on.

grizzlybear71
grizzlybear71

That's fine. But what is Mr. Conservative, Rick Santorum, proposing to cut from the federal budget that will allow for the level of defense spending he (and you) insist is necessary? Is he willing to eliminate the Medicare Part D entitlement he voted to create? No, he has said that he stands by that decision ("but we should have funded it"). Newt and Romney support that massive entitlement too (or at least they did when they were campaigning in Florida). These three are completely full of crap and not one of them is even remotely conservative.

Amy
Amy

He's not proposing enough (nor is Newt or Romney)... but the White House isn't the only answer to this problem. It's only one side of the equation - or should I say 1/3 of the equation?

I truly do appreciate Ron Paul and the fact that he brings the conversation back to what is constitutionally sound. I will vote for him if he's the nominee (and without as much trepidation as Romney) - but his national security stand gives me pause. On that subject we will have to agree to disagree. I know I won't change your mind and likewise I'm unwavering on my stand. :-)

Keep in mind that your concern for Dr. Paul's attitude on foreign policy is addressed by your first paragraph. If Congress declares war, President Paul will commit our forces to the effort and win decisively with as little life and treasure lost as possible.

We really need our military. I was watching this "Doomsday Preppers" show and a liberal east coast couple were featured who refused to take any measures to defend themselves in the case of a WROL situation. These are the same kind that hate the military and think if we just be nice to the Muslims they'll leave us alone. But when the SHTF, these will be the first ones to cry for the government (or somebody) to come and help them. Pathetic.

Pooky, welcome to military life. FDR, Truman, Ike, and Clinton, and Carter, all stripped the military. You may remember the effects of those guys. You may be the best of the best, but demogods care nothing for you. While America cheers for you, these people will always use assets to buy votes, not save hero's lives. FYI, Ob has gutted the state dept., to use money to throw at the Chicago dumb bunnies. He also lies about just everything. God bless you, and your family, and may He keep you safe. America loves you, be reassured.

PFFV

Of course the only cuts Democrats can make would be in Defense. The arrogant and pompous Democrats always want to cut the department that keeps this nation safe. Where are the 70,000+ jobs going to come from for these laid off military service men and women? Why is it that Police and Firemen can never be cut but the military always can be? I think our service men and women are as important (I believe more so) as our local police and fire personnel. I would much rather fight our enemies on their turf than on ours. Obama is dismantling everything that stands for this nations greatness. Our enemies laugh at us; our allies don't trust us anymore. Obama has done more to destroy the American Dream than any other President in history. I loathe and despise him for what he has done to my (and yours) children and grandchildren’s futures. They will not have the same opportunities as we have had, thanks to Obama and his mindless idiot followers.

PFFV, As stated above by pookysgirl, there is a Constitutional mandate to defend our country. This administration is abdicating this mandate with political abandon. as you say, "..Obama and his mindless idiot followers" are doing more to destroy the American dream (actually America itself) than any other President in history. Believe me, you are far from being alone in your passion. This country will not be taken down .

I sincerely believe that POTUS is crazy

He is doing everything backwards - He is EMPOWERING the BAD Muslims - destroying Israel -

Pushing the US into a ditch -

Declaring war on religion - Starting "class" warfare -

Causing the PERCEPTION of Racism to accelerate

Being divisive in general - especially along Partisan lines

Destroying US exceptionalism - encouraging the growth of other Countries AT THE EXPENSE of the US -

Discourages job creation -

TRAMPLES the CONSTITUTION -- BLAH _ BLAH _ BLAH

Weakening the Military and telling everyone about it !

He truly is killing this Country!

Is it just me - What the FRACK is going on here?

Saying it will stop in 2012 is not good enough - People must be outraged - I don't see it yet -

I don't see or hear the passion or frustration of the citizens

Please fill me in on what to do

Yes, I know. It's Newt Gingrich.

Seriously, Grizzly. Why is Dr Paul wasting our time running for president? He says himself that he's not serious about it. He has never been able to catch on as a leader in Congress. Even he says he's not going to be nominated. It's irritating.

One of these days he's going to bust a blood vessel getting all wound up like that. Hopefully *not* on live tv. er internet.

Seriously, *what* does he want from all this?

I would say that Dr. Paul would like all Americans to think very seriously about our freedoms and what the proper role of government is in our lives.

I can't believe that he- or anyone who is in any contact with the politics junkies on these blogs and comments sections could not know that we think about these things constantly, every day. Obsessively. I'm afraid he is- and you are, preaching to the choir.

And have to I wonder why he and his followers- you, aren't throwing body & soul into reaching the democrats/ liberals because they either don't realize the consequences of what they're doing or they don't care.

I agree with you grizzly that without a strong and relatively debt free economy, the USD can be in peril.

But by the same token the share size of the U.S economy will have serious effect on these same market forces and Governments that are looking to bring down America through weakening her currency.

In the short term it may seem to work but imho will prove to be a most unwise thing to do.

Where you loose me grizzly is the war for oil argument, I understand where you are coming from but I just have more questions than answers with that argument.

grizzlybear71
grizzlybear71

Oh, I see what you mean now. I think you are missing the point though...the idea is that our hegemony in terms of the petrodollar was at risk if Saddam started to sell his oil for Euros rather than US Dollars. We invaded under the administration's premise of WMDs but we were actually invading to stop them from destroying the dollar. We only get away with the printing of money (inflation) the way we have because the Saudis and everyone else buy dollars to then buy oil with, under an agreement dating back to the early 1970s under Nixon. If and when that is broken, we are screwed as the USD will be toast. So...we are about to go to war with Iran, once again under the WMD narrative, but once again it is really about our petrodollar hegemony.

blackbird
blackbird

No. Some say for oil (speculation) others say to change the face of the Middle East over time to a more democratic, peaceful system of Government (speculation) the administration said for wmd's. I am sure there are more speculations out there but if it was for the oil where is it. The Reuters article linked above is telling.

grizzlybear71

How is the last paragraph speculation? Are you saying those events did not really happen?

grizzlybear71

That is what I am talking about...check out the very last paragraph in your linked article.

grizzlybear71
grizzlybear71

I didn't get far into that article before I realized it was a bunch of nonsense. Ron Paul did not name his son Rand, he named him Randall. His name had nothing to do with Ayn Rand. "Rand" is a nickname given to him by his wife.

When we go to war with Iran, keep in mind it will have nothing to do with nuclear weapons. It will be because they begin to sell their oil for gold and currencies other than the US dollar.

grizzlybear71
grizzlybear71

So, Mr. blackbird, see that big red section in that pie graph in your link? The one that says "Medicare 23%" and represents the single largest portion of the budget? Do ya think ole' Rick Santorum, "the most conservative candidate still remaining" according to Rush Limbaugh, would be willing to raise taxes substantially to cover the giant unfunded prescription drug program he helped add to that big red section back when he was a Senator? Newt supports Medicare Part D too...think he'd be willing to jack up taxes to cover it?

Allen Poe
Allen Poe

I dropped medicare, you can too.

The question is...will a President Santorum drop Medicare Part D, which he voted to create? The answer is...not likely.

blackbird

Hi grizzly, blackbird or John is fine. I support Governor Palin, will Santorum and Gingrich raise taxes "to cover the giant unfunded prescription drug program" they have said no, do I believe them, that depends on weather the Republicans can capture the Senate and strengthen the House.

Kari George
Kari George

Did you read what I wrote? We "have the money" to discard perfectly good cars, bail out crooked banks & traders, entitlements and loans/ subsidies for failed "green" energy startups, etc out the wazoo + all of the above but we don't have the money to sufficiently finish what we started or do it effectively and protect our country?

This sounds more like a priorities problem to me.

Exactly Kari, I completely agree. Its about priorities, just that Washington only cares about its own priorities for power instead of doing what is right by the folks.
