The other day the College Democrats came out with a new ad video called Why I’m a Democrat where several college students share their deep wisdom of why they chose to become Democrats.

Needless to say, Beck and crew have a ton of fun with this one:

Rebuttal...

1) Death Panels. They will exist. They are created and specified within the Obamacare bill. They are a committee of government advisers who determine what medical options are acceptable and affordable under government-run health care. No, a committee is not going to decide whether YOU live or die; but by indirectly limiting options for patients based on age and existing conditions, they may deny coverage for medical treatments that would prolong life. It happens currently in England. It will happen here if Obamacare is not repealed.

2) OK. Can you provide us with the accurate numbers so thatwe know exactly how much was spent? In my opinion, that trip should never have happened in the first place. So even if it was $200 I would be hacked.

3) Stem cell research. The main objection to stem cell research by conservatives is that the harvesting of the embryonic cells kills the embryo. This, to many, is murder. Some advances have been made toward the "safe" harvesting of embryonic stem cells. If this becomes foolproof, I think that many conservatives will be more than happy to jump the fence.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=embryos-survive-stem-cell-harvest

I disagree with Beck's OPINION that this is eugenics.

4) Liberalism and Communism. Beck is not the one mixing this up, the Liberals are. Obama = Communist. But the Democratic party, made up of mostly liberals, has abandoned their liberal views to follow whatever Lord Obama wants, which is Communism. Communism existed in the former Soviet Union. It did not work. By the way, we are not a democracy. We are a Republic. Big difference. One more point. If I give you the benefit of not assuming that every liberal wants to "take over your life and invade your privacy", you better give me the benefit of not assuming that every conservative wants to get rich by funding giant corporations.

5) Darwin. He may be very wrong about Darwin. I don't know. I have NEVER been in a situation where Darwin's theory of evolution had any impact whatsoever on my life. I do not read Darwin. I do not care about Darwin. I think many people put too much emphasis on one man's work and they do not even consider the ramifications of their own actions. I know for a fact that he did not provide the biological substance to be a literal "father" of racism, so I would have to believe that this metaphor was Beck's OPINION.

6) As a final point, you bring up subjective matter and try to use it intelligently, but other than #2, all of your points are about his opinions. You are as clueless as Michael. You have no proof that Beck's facts are wrong, you just don't like him. That is fine and I really don't care if you agree with him. My point is that you need to separate fact from opinion if you are saying he is an idiot.

Smattering is an excellent word to use in YOUR post though: A slight superficial knowledge of a language or subject --Dictionary.com

well thats funny, especially when joe biden didnt even know who the president was during the great depression. and how many times has obama messed up because he cant even keep up with the words the liberal goons are telling him to say? demoCROOKS have a way of picking and choosing who they talk about and what they say about those people, and 99 percent of it is NOT even based on facts. and it was the college DEMOCRATS who made a stupid video about why they were a democrat. please!

Why, Elle14! You surprise me! I had no idea that you would join Alyssa in perfectly making my point for me! The depth of your intellect and the breadth of your argumentative skills astound me. Thank you so, so much for making my case for me.

Do me a favor, would you, Elle14? Just keep posting responses to my posts. They're classic examples of the typical liberal's response to logic and reason, thus incredibly strong reinforcement of my argument. I particularly admire your aversion toward ad hominem attacks, But your tolerance for the "inbred" and your compassion for my ass and my children are what really touch me. Your heartfelt kindness brings tears to my eyes. Or rather, my eye. I only have one now, you know. I accidentally shot out the other one when I was rocking on my porch with my shotgun. I tried to take aim at those damn "college kids" walking on my lawn, but when the going gets tough, you "kids" sure know how to tuck tail and run!

Just one tiny correction, though, hon, before I take off my eye patch and climb into bed next to Grandpa: I didn't watch the Glen Beck video. I don't plan to. I'm not really a Glen Beck fan. I only watched the College Democrats video.

I meant to comment earlier, but I loved your little list of tips. Just one alteration, if I may:

9. Don't ever delete your comments; even if you're failing, don't.

I really would have loved to have read what she had to say. C'est la vie.

Cynthia Pitman
Cynthia Pitman

Posters can't delete other posters' comments, and usually can't even delete their own. The moderators of the site are usually the only ones who can delete comments. Most moderators are reluctant to do so because lively debates attract lots of site activity. However, when someone's comments consistently violate posting protocol, inviting more and more intellectual vermin to come crawling in (as was happening here), good moderators do not hesitate to take action.

Nice talking to you, William. Hey, in closing, here's something I was going to post, but it's only funny if you've seen Anchorman:

"I'm a Democrat because I love lamp."

:)

William Sisskind
William Sisskind

I became upset and defensive because having read that post, I saw a generalization which I thought was pointed toward what I had written. The confusion led to that last comment.

On another note, while I'm on it; if it's considered negative for college students like myself to label themselves kids, and if they can't call themselves adults because they cannot be totally dependent on themselves (for the most part), then what are we? Adults-in-training, I'd suppose.

It's all very confusing to me. That's why, instead of pick a side and argue for it passionately, I look at all of the sides and try to see the good and bad in both. That was my original point: Parties don't matter, but the actions of the people in power do.

I apologize if I sounded childish; again, I'm transitioning.

Cynthia Pitman
Cynthia Pitman

William, if you're 18 years old or older, you're an adult. That's it. Very simple. ALL of us who are 18 and older could be considered "adults-in-training." We're ALL learning what life has to teach us every day. None of us has a monopoly on wisdom or folly. Some of us, however, have decidedly more education and/or real-world experience that informs our opinions on political issues. Opinions based on naive speculation and/or wishful thinking don't count for much when you're trying to make a living for you and yours as you watch taxes, the cost of living, and unemployment rates go higher and higher and higher, with no end in sight.

What I object to is if, when a political discussion gets feisty, adults who are attending college default to calling themselves "kids," thus implying other adults should ease up on them. Sorry. That's not going to happen. Like it or not, you're no longer a "kid." Those days are over. Deal with it.

Look, if you're not ready to play hardcore argumentation, don't stick your neck out. If you are, learn the rules of engagement. Otherwise, you're just low-hanging fruit for the rest of us. For instance, here are a few rules that could benefit some of you:

1. Don't reveal yourself as a smug smart-ass and then profess to be eliciting civil political debate from others whose minds you say you might like to change. There is no persuasive advantage to alienating your opposition. (Yes, Michael, I'm looking at you!).

2. Don't invite a straw man into the discussion by misrepresenting anyone's argument (Chris!).

3. Don't be outraged because no one is treating your friends like "kids" when they are adults. (Alyssa!).

4. Don't say, "He started it." (Michael!) That's just SO lame. It's like saying, "My dad can beat up your dad." People will think you're 12.

5. Don't use racial, ethnic, or cultural slurs, such as "inbred rednecks" (Elle14!). That's really not accepted anymore in decent society. Saying those things reflects poorly on you and those who raised you.

6. Don't attack punctuation when you have no rebuttal to the substance of an argument -- especially if your own grammar and usage are laughably inept. (Chris and Alyssa!) You embarrass yourself. Chris, when you were loftily informing me of the correct number of question marks to use, you said, "its one by the way." Ironically, you made three errors in writing those five words. See what I mean???? It's embarrassing. Maybe Alyssa can help you figure out what they are. If not, let me know, and I'll help you out. Your errors in that post are literally in the double digits. Ouch. That level of ineptitude with the English language tends to discredit your argument with most educated people. Most will reject it out of hand, assuming you're borderline illiterate. Sad, yes. But that's the lay of the land.

7. Don't try to look badass to your friends by threatening to hack people on the internet (Dicks!). Not unless you have a really, really good lawyer.

8. Last but not least, don't pick on moms who are defending their children. That's just common decency. Moms get a pass -- especially nice moms like gmalmom.

William Sisskind
William Sisskind

Was that a thinly veiled ad hominem attack? I love ad hominem attacks! They're like little bugs that have poison stingers, but they move so quickly that I can smash them before they do any real damage. Therefore, Paul_Adams, I'm sorry to disappoint you; but I am neither an "emo kid" nor do I label myself as a "kid." I am twenty years old and still call myself a proud "adult," whatever that word may mean to you.

Also, if you had bothered to read my original post, you would have seen that I mentioned "earning my worth." I'm not sitting on my rear begging my parents for money. I'm currently interning and preparing to enter the job market in a few years' time. I'm also trying to market myself as a freelancer for writing. So don't say that I never held a real job, because a) it's extremely hard to do so in this current time, and b) I'm working on it.

And as per your last argument, I don't understand where "career politicians" come into play. I specifically said that being a politician is a job to be done right; if you're not doing it right, then you shouldn't do the job. If you are, then lead for as long as you can lead correctly.

Before I go, where did you get the idea that I think Obama is the perfect president? Yes, I see what you did there; you made a sly dig at me by making a generalization. And I think you can see clearly from this post that I do not just shout and shut out response from "the other side." I like to listen to the opposition. It provides entertainment.

Cynthia Pitman

". . .backwoods inbred red necks (sic)"

Now THAT'S the way to do it, Elle14! Rise above the fray and demonstrate the cultural tolerance that is the backbone of the enlightened liberal elite! You College Democrats are GOOD! What an intellectual challenge you are proving yourselves to be!

Okay, so we've had the hacker threat, we've had the redneck slur, so what's next????? C'mon. Where are your Palin jokes??? You must have SOME you haven't used a thousand times before. I'm sure you have some on Trig that are just hilarious! Or would you rather play Weiner jokes??? They're kind of played out, now that he has resigned, but I think we could still have a little fun with them. I'll bet Dicks agrees.

There's so much yelling on this post that I can hear the dialogue in my head; and it hurts my ears. Congratulations! You've broken the fourth wall of the Internet!

And why am I not surprised that the ruckus is about politics? Here we are, pitting Republicans against Democrats. It's one of the oldest and longest domestic wars this country knows. George Washington himself -- the man who helped to bring this country to fruition, and its first citizen officially titled President -- said that political parties were "frightful despotism(s)." He said that in a popularly elected government -- to paraphrase, if I may -- parties would distract the officials from their duties and promote jealousy among the people, leaving the country in a vulnerable state.

And look at how vulnerable we are! You're getting in a tizzy over a grown man who lambasts college students because of a political disagreement? Both this argument and Glenn Beck's argument against the College Democrats are ridiculous; and it is clear to me that there is no real winner.

This is why I do not identify with any political party. I cannot submit loyalty to a single group, one who may work for me in some ways but not others. You could call me an Independent, but I don't even want that. I just want to be able to succeed in life and make a name for myself. I want to be able to earn my worth. I want to form a small band of friends and colleagues and create something incredible. Do I need a government to do that? Not particularly.

And if I eventually have to pick between candidates in an election, then I shall; but don't expect me to think about it in terms of elephants and donkeys. (Is it a donkey? It always looked more like a horse to me; but that's just my opinion.) I think of people in politics as normal men and women who are just trying to do their job like any other citizen. However, like other citizens, some of them don't do their job very well. That's regardless of political party. People screw up sometimes. What's wrong with that? They're human.

To end this rant, I will say some random words: Bubble! Nitpick! Shrubbery! Tweet!

I thereby end this Internet debate. Go home.

EDIT: Wasn't this video made for the CDA convention last week? The video is old. Either Glenn was just looking for something to rant about, or news was slow, or both. Oh, network television: Why you so crazy?

I find it hard to laugh at this simply because 1) It's a pathetic excuse for what you might call "intellectual rigor" and 2) this is totally what my campus's Young Democrats are like. It's not funny in person. I thought the "wider net" comment was funny because our CR's are very diverse in their opinions, priorities, even race. The YD's are completely white, 70% female, and have a single minded obsession with abortion and gay rights. Every activity they do is based around that. ". . .picking on college kids"????? Are you serious??? You "college kids" have the right to vote, and your votes count the same as all other adults' votes. You "college kids" have the means, the shameless vanity, and the poor judgment to make your weak-minded opinions known on this sad, silly little video. Yet, when you are challenged, we're supposed to consider you as "kids" ??? You have got to be kidding!

You're either old enough to vote or you're not. You can't have it both ways. You can't hold the right to vote at the age of 18 and then, when challenged in the public arena of political discourse, expect people to pat you on the head, call you "kids," and give you an "Everyone is a Winner!" trophy so as not to traumatize your fragile little egos or starve your insatiable need for yet another self-esteem fix.

Take the lollipop out of your mouth and quit trying to hide behind your mommy's skirts. You want to play with the grown-ups? Fine. Play. But you'll have to BE a grown up. So either grow up and get in the game or shut up and get out.

So wait, because you have a tiny snippet of why these students identify with the democratic party, you assume to know that those singular reasons are the sole contributor to their choice of political party? Glomming together tiny pieces of large and complicated conversations isn't proof, its ignorance. You learn that in college, but i guess you wouldn't know that, or the correct number of question marks to put at the end of a sentence. (its one by the way)

Be careful what you say, Ms. Pitman, or can i say Cynthia? I don't know whats appropriate, since you refer to people like me as both children and adults.

us "college kids" have the means, shameless confidence and perhaps poor judgement to think that we can affect the course of our nation. Some of us choose to side with democrats, and some with republicans, and some with none at all, being too consumed with actual work to invest time in worrying about politics, just like you and your peers.

If you don't want 18 year olds to vote, then maam, why do you accept the thousands of 18 year old soldiers' help in defending your country? too ignorant to vote, but convenient enough to take a bullet for me? I find it hard to believe that hiding behind their mothers' skirts offers them any protection.

I know for sure that not everyone is a winner, I attend college, where I am thrust into an urban environment far away from my suburban upbringing, where people are literally starving right in front of my eyes. I try my hardest in the science program at an esteemed university, and I do not always come out on top. So please tell me Cynthia, why do you condescend the people who are the future of America, and the people currently defending it so that you can use inappropriate punctuation on the internet in the name of glenn beck's superiority?

"So please tell me Cynthia, why do you condescend the people who are the future of America, and the people currently defending it. . ."

Honey, reread my post. Slowly. You misread it, and as a result, you're making what is called a "straw man" argument (a type of argumentum ad logicam), which is what we educated people know to be a "logical fallacy." I am not the one who "referred to people like [you] as both children and adults." Alyssa Onofreo is the one who spoke up to defend all of you as mere "college kids." (By the way, why isn't Alyssa defending her own statement like a big girl, rather than defaulting to wagging her little finger over punctuation? Not that it's not sweet of you to come to the rescue of a damsel in distress, Chris. It's very sweet. Simply darling! But she IS an adult, isn't she? Or is she a "college kid"? She makes it so very, very confusing for those of us who think logically. Maybe you can take her by the hand and gently explain that to her. Be nice, though. Don't hurt her little feelings. She's just a "college kid.")

Oh, and Chris, can you please cite the words from my post that assert that I don't think 18-year-old citizens should have the right to vote -- specifically, the military? If you reread the post -- slowly and carefully this time, looking up any words you don't know -- you'll see that my objection is to adults who, when entering the arena of political discourse and finding themselves outmatched, want to default to calling themselves "kids" and thus be treated as such. (Oh, and I doubt that anyone in the military considers herself or himself to be -- or is considered by anyone else to be -- a "kid." When being fired upon in battle, I feel quite certain our soldiers don't do what Alyssa metaphorically did, i.e., wave their little tear-stained hankies, stomp their feet, and cry out, "Don't shoot! We're just "kids"!)

Regarding the offense you take at the "inappropriate punctuation" I used (multiple question marks), well, gee whiz, Chris, have you read your OWN post??? Do you really want to play this punctuation game???? Do you have any idea how many errors there are in your post????? Do you?????? If not, let me know. I'll correct them for you.

Sad that you, a member of the exalted youth who will change the future for the better (despite having little to no knowledge about the past or the present), has to stoop to sniveling over a stylistic punctuation choice rather than responding to the substance of a post. But then again, you're just a "college kid," so I won't be too tough on you. I don't want to make Alyssa cry.

By the way, what do you typically do when you encounter those people who "are literally starving right in front of [your] eyes"??? Do you ever actually, you know, buy them a meal????? Do the other "college kids" ever buy them a meal????? If so, do you use your OWN money, or do you use mommy and daddy's money?????? Or do you just stage an event, hire a band, guzzle beer and sell t-shirts to "raise awareness"? ? ? ? ?????????????

I have to run now, Chris. The real world calls. But thanks for your reply. You gave it the old "college kid" try, didn't you???????? And that's what really matters, isn't it????????????? Not the fact that you misread and misrepresented my remarks, right????????????? I'm sure it wasn't on purpose. That's just how you "college kids" roll, right????????????????????????????????

I'm a Democratic because as a college student, I've never been responsible for my own well-being and haven't a clue about how things actually work in the real world. And because a janitor is the same as a judge and therefore has the right to the same standard of living. But don't expect me to lower my standard because, after all, I'll be a college graduate and that's not really like being a janitor no matter what I may say to the contrary. So we'll just have to raise the janitors up with social justice programs and transfers of wealth. Rich people can pay for that. Of course, if I ever get rich, we'll have to find another way.
