Glenn mentioned Chevy Volt with range of 40 miles on a charge. I had my doubts until I went to site below.

Volt is an electric car that uses gas to create its own electricity. Plug it in, let it charge overnight, and it's ready to run on a pure electric charge for up to 40 miles(3) — gas and emissions free. After that, Volt keeps going, even if you can't plug it in. Volt uses a range-extending gas generator that produces enough energy to power it for hundreds of miles on a single tank of gas.

    That was a good show…

I just wonder if we can turn things around in 2012. If Obama looses, can we get back to normal or will it be to late?

I would love to go to his website, extreme but I can't afford to pay for it. Kinda bothers me that he charges for it….

Thanks for posting …I'll be here tomorrow too…

Hundreds of miles on a single tank of gas, huh?

I've also got a fairly new Chevy (2009 Cobalt). It gets almost 500 miles on a (12 gallon) tank of gas, and it cost me less than $12,000 — and no, I didn't get to cash in on the “cash for clunkers.” It has no electric motor, no plug-in, and it's just got a simple, evil internal combustion engine.

European diesel engines routinely get better than 50 mpg. So, what's the Volt's advantage, again? I mean, besides a hugely expensive battery that will last about 4 years, and need replacing for about the price I paid for my car?

Oh, yeah. It looks really good with a “coexist” bumper sticker on it.

    That's worth 41 grand, easy.

Very powerful! We owe a lot to Glenn Beck .. he is an American hero for his work on uncovering the UGLY transformational change we are in.

Will I always get 40 miles on an electric charge?

No. Like any electric vehicle, Volt's electric miles per charge will vary. Like all vehicles, electric vehicles are less efficient in extremely hot or cold temperatures. In addition to outside temperatures, use of features like air conditioning and heat, personal driving style, additional cargo in the vehicle and the age of the battery will affect the electric range.

How long does Volt take to charge?

In about ten hours, you'll have a fully charged Volt waiting for you, ready to go. You can also install a 240V outlet, which can charge Volt in as little as four hours.

Makes you want to run out and buy one. This is just another example of anything run by this administration.

The other advantage to electric cars is all the maintenance they don't need, but gasoline cars do. Electric cars have motors, not engines, so they don't need oil changes every few thousand miles. They don't need fuel injectors or filters, air filters, radiators… not sure if they even need a transmission. They might have one, like a 10-speed bicycle has one… but they could probably go just fine without, like an old single speed bike. An electric car could just use a rheostat as a throttle, and maybe a switch to reverse polarity and flick it into reverse.

They do require maintenance, contrary to popular misconception, they have brushes and bearings that do require replacement. As for transmissions most electrics have a motor directly driving each wheel. The big one though as Notropis stated is the battery pack, price one but I would advise you to be seated and possibly have oxygen nearby.Another factor adding wear and tear on the motors is the wheel mounting, being bounced about going down the road. They are getting close but as for myself I'll wait another ten years.

The volt is about to come to market. Will be interesting to see how it sells.
