Herman Cain describes major differences between 999 and Rick Perry’s flat tax

Yesterday in Alabama, Herman Cain was asked what he thought about Perry possibly skipping future debates. He didn’t think it was a very good strategy and also talked about why he thinks Perry has dropped in the polls.

But this also led him down the road to a quick synopsis on the major differences between 999 and Perry’s flat tax, which he calls “flat tax lite”. The short of it is that he says the flat tax doesn’t expand the base and therefore keeps taxes higher because it still relies on income. 999 does expand the base and therefore keeps taxes at the lowest possible rate. The second major difference is that he says with 999, prices will go down because all of the embedded costs are ripped out with the first 9. The flat tax he argues keeps those embedded costs.

Regardless of what you think about the two plans, Cain kept it substantive and didn’t go ‘scorched earth’ on Perry’s plan. I respect that and it only adds credibility to his words.
