Herman Cain dropping out is a sad day for America

Today is a sad day for America, in that we have just witnessed what appears to be a media take-down of one of our candidates. I say that because, as I’ve said before, I don’t believe for a moment that he is guilty of any of the accusations that have been leveled at him.

Consider for a moment if Herman Cain had gotten the John Edwards treatment by the media. Where would he be today if all of these false allegations were relegated to the National Enquirer? He would likely still be enjoying a huge lead in the polls. But no, the media was full speed ahead with these allegations from day one, many of them pronouncing him guilty without any evidence on which to convict him. It was clear that the agenda in the media was to take down Herman Cain.

And those that didn’t pronounce him guilty complained about the way he handled these allegations and basically called him incompetent. But as Rush said early on, Herman Cain was just an honest guy trying to deal with these allegations honestly. He’s not a politician and didn’t handle these allegations as a politician would, and for many, even on our side of the aisle, that was enough to declare him unqualified for the presidency.

But in the end, Herman Cain was a conservative that knew the right questions to ask to get the job done. As he admits, he isn’t perfect, but he is a man who would have had a huge impact on this nation as president of the United States. As a successful black man who’s lived in poverty and made himself what he is today because of his own ambition, his message against this entitlement class would have been strong, perhaps even a dangerous cocktail for the left in 2012.

I know Herman Cain wasn’t everyone’s candidate. I’ve been on and off the “Cain Train” myself. But deep inside I always knew that no matter what happened in the election, if it came down to Herman Cain, I would run to the polls to vote for him.

But now I can’t.

I believe he’s doing the right thing for he and his family and I support him in his decision to drop out of the race. I hate that it had to come to this because, as my friend @pookysgirl on twitter said, “It’s official: We don’t pick our candidates anymore, the media does.”
