Overall I liked Romney's speech much more. However I think my favorite zinger came from Obama. His giving Chris Matthews a stroke had me laughing hard.
But like I said, Romney was funnier overall. His letter O number 16 trillion line is right up there. In fact if you ask me tomorrow I may say it was the funniest line of the night. That is how close I think those two were.
At least Obama smiled and shook hands. Yes, he's had a tough four years that will soon come to an end but he tried to appear civil even though you had to know he wanted to jack Mitt in the nose.
That, my friends is what a President looks like and sounds like! You will never catch Mitt partying in Vegas when the shiesse hits the the fan.
I would liked to have seen Ms. obama's face after a coupe of good zingers by Mitt. I'm sure she had a look that would have been something to see....probably a glare at Mitt.
Romney is very Regan-like! Both witty, funny, smart, affable! This is really like the 1980's election, Reagan vs Carter!
I think, I'm not sure, but I think, it looks like maybe probably, Mitt just copped Barrys lunch money. Not sure just guessing. Audios Barry!!!
Mitt: jab, jab, jab, jab, roundhouse right: "...brought to you by the letter "O" and the number 16 trillion." That was brilliant!!!! I'm sure I enjoyed Mitt's remarks much more than did obama.
Pack up your $hit, barry. You're goin' back to ChiCongo!
One...two...three..nah nah-
NAAAH nah........ barack-O-
BAAAMA....................hey-
hey hey..............Goo-ood-
BYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYE!
I was blown away by his timing:) It doesn't sound like Dennis Miller to me, to me it sounds like Jay Leno, actually.
No matter who the writer(s) were, he was funny whether you support him or not. Funny is funny.
You can really tell how the race is going watching the body language of both candidates. Mitt Romney looks relaxed, sounds confident, and clearly listening to his speech he sounds like knows he's going to win. The President on the other hand, was beating himself up, his speech was flat but had a few good lines, he seemed like he's had enough of the job, and looked uneased while delievering his speech. Glad they both put politics aside to raise money for a great cause. My favorite line of Mitt's speech, 'I have my beautiful wife Ann, and you have Bill Clinton.'
Yeah!
the best joke was that one about the 47%...or the other one about his offshore accounts...or that one about why none of his 5 FIVE sons joined the army...or the one about no showing his taxes returns...
He was so funny and he still laughing, at us.
Even funnier...the 47% who do play the system having to actually get off their arses and go to work! Better yet...you believing the Imposter gives a rip about the working class, the military, or youth. Youth are merely usable pawns for him. How funny is sending our men and women overseas to serve with rubber bullets, while the enemy has live ammo. Take a hike you ignorant, insolent little troll! Can't wait to see your head explode from shock in November!
The point of the dinner is to put politics aside for a charitable cause. In keeping with Romney's elite status, and consequently not having to play by the rules, he delivered a very well written comedic speech in his typical board up his backside, phoney as a three dollar bill style, that was only once removed from his his typical campaign stump drivel.
All past participants have had the good grace to be self-deprecating, or lambast political life in general, while lightly roasting the "other" side on a personal level. But of course Mitt inhabits his own reality, so did not feel constrained by any sense of decorum or tradition, and used the event to score cheap political shots.
Do you really think, given that fact that Romney has held so many different positions on each important issue, that Obama's writers couldn't have come up with their own hatchet job, if only they could bring themselves to stoop to Mitt's level? Mitt scores big and misses the mark at the same time. I see why you all sound so proud.
Gee...three very public leftist run debates just isn't enough for you lib tools! Still don't have a sense of humor...yet you cheer on Joe Biden laughing at the things that matter to real Americans and the fact that you share in his vulgarity with glee. Romney gave a great roasting speech and did include self-depreciating humor. Too bad you're too busy protecting the socialist in chief to notice!
Biden wasn't laughing about the things that matter to "real Americans", he was laughing at Ryan being able to tell lies, either his or his master's, while keeping a straight face. He was laughing to keep himself from crying. Please don't wrap yourself in the mantle of being a real American, while presuming that those of us that don't agree with your opinions are something else.
I agree that he used self-deprecating humor, his political humor was way too pointed for the event, as evidenced by the heading of this post: "Hilarious and Brutal". Apparently, brutal is fine as long as it is aimed at someone who is not a "Real American".
Anyone who follows the weak, hypocritical socialist policies of this Imposter in the Oval Office and claims to be an American is seriously and dangerously ignorant. The progressive movement of the left is not about helping the weak or the working class, it's about using them as pawns to gain power and crush the middle class out of existence. Name on nation where socialism exists and there is a vibrant middle class. You can't because there isn't one! The Democrat Party is now the socialist party and ignorant people are the only ones falling for the free stuff to support it. It is a political and financial failure that was set up by Clinton through the 1990s and carried on in 2006 when both the House and Congress gained a Democrat majority and passed even more insane policies that collapsed our nation financially. Bush was weak to let it happen, but it was the spending and passing of insane socialist policies that caused our nation's financial collapse. The Democratic party of old is dead and it has been entirely taken over by union socialists he l l bent on pushing an agenda that has failed time and time again. Biden wasn't laughing to keep himself from crying...he was being a condescending jackass! He is nothing more than a glorified, lazy government drone, who doesn't give a rip about the working class or the middle class, just filling his pockets. The only reason Biden would cry is if he lost his cushy pension for doing nothing in office for the last 40 years!
You're completely off base. Everyone took shot at everyone else. And Romney had some jokes about himself. The one about having a governor as a father and serving one term. The one about designated driver. Big bird. His prep for the debate. What they wear. He even said that the media would say he hangs with rich people. It was a jab at the media, but at the same time, joked about his status. His joke about Biden laughing at anything is also self-deprecating as it implies his jokes would be flat and he'd need Joe to laugh at them. At the end, he complimented Obama.
You just heard what you wanted to hear and went about displaying your bias.
Obama said one thing about Mitt shopping FOR stores instead of shopping AT them. Not even that political. He referenced Ryan's marathon time trouble and Clint yelling at empty chairs. He expressed a preference for Cuomo being the next President if there was going to be one who is a one time Governor from a major northeastern state (instead of Romney). He referenced Romney not having to worry about
being attacked as a celebrity for being so popular with our allies overseas. Oh yeah, he mentioned his own very important Honey Boo-Boo endorsement.
As for Romney's comments, just look at the title of this thread: "Hilarious and Brutal." I quote the host of this web site: "But I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised at how funny Romney was as he delivered line after line, mostly about the president. In fact he landed some pretty hard blows on the president, namely one where in using the Sesame Street reference he said that President Obama’s remarks
“are brought to you by the letter O and the number 16 Trillion.” Ouch! And there’s a lot more where that came from."
But, since I am so biased, please, don't take my word for it, just scroll up to the top and read for yourself.
I stopped counting Romney's too sharp barbs. In the role of Count Adhemar, Romney comes to the jousting match with real steel tips on his lances, while, a la Ulrich von Lichtenstein, every one else is using glass tips. (If you don't get the reference, Google "A Knight's Tale")
Oh, and while we are on the subject of bias, of course only Romney's video is posted here.
This was one of the best 'speeches' I've heard Romney give. I do hope the left uses some of this to attempt to slam Romney, because there was nothing here that wasn't great. Obama, on the other hand, fell completely flat with his, using his trademark smile to try and push the punchlines across, which apparently doesn't work anymore - too bad for that.
Timing is everything in comedy and while Romney was 'spot on', Obama was just a 'spot' on the floor.
Why! the racist statement? Your probably a leftist on a conservative blog site trying to paint us true conservatives as racist, sexist, and homophobic. And there is a reason why none of us has responded to your racist rant...with me being the exception.
...first off TRUTH #1 is not Mitt Romney WHITE and President Barach Hussein Obama BLACK . As for being a LEFTIST TRUTH #2 , I consider myself a WHITE CHRISTIAN MALE Libertarian Conservative who believes in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence .As for being Racist keep your JUDGEMENT to yourself for I will only answer to the GOD OF MY FAITH . Also I couldn't give damn if anyone reads or responds to my statements especially you david r .
May the GOD OF MY FAITH , forgive you david r , have a great day and VOTE for ROMNEY to save YOUR COUNTRY . For my Country is a CONSERVATIVE CANADA
"The run I was on made Sinatra, Flynn, Jagger, Richards, all of them look like droopy-eyed armless children."
-- Mitt Romney or Charlie Sheen ?
Not an easy game, is it?
I bet Obama was seething with anger inside & having a hard time hiding it! He probably went back to the White House & kicked poor Bo < probably the ONLY 'friend' he has left!
“This message was brought to you tonight by the letter ‘O’ and the number 16,000,000,000,000.”
Hilarious and punishing.
He is class personified. He has shown great compassion and reverence for what the Al Smith Dinner is all about and what it represents in his closing statements. And his sarcastic comedic remarks towards the president and vice president were based on truths behind the laughter. This was Mitt at his best!
I'll go along with his children probably being nice kids but I'm equally sure both BO & MO have done their best to indoctrinate them with liberal BS about America & fostered their own hate-filled racist mindset! ...As to MItt being a class act! Absolutely, 100% agree!
Most of the people I have talked to this morning thought Mitt Romney's speech was funny but way way less self deprecating than President Obama's and so he came off a bit arrogant. Some said he was down right too mean! So the Far right may have thought these embellished things about how Romney killed or the other wildly over the top adulation that I have read in this comment section but even the crowd at the event last night, which was surely a more pro romney gathering thought he was going a bit too far and his speech missed the normal tone of the evening as many reports have have stated this morn and which was evident at the time by the audible jeers after some of his lines! It's one thing to be partisan and in favor of your guy no matter what it's another to refuse to live in reality!
Far right?? Your reading material needs to be upgraded if the 'reports' you're reading are as you'd like us to think. But then, you're a troll who has only read other leftie trolls to get his trolling point, are't you?
Matthew, why would you assume it was a more "pro Romney gathering? Did you not notice all the media in attendance?
On a night when jokes are allowed, and in good fun, I really dont know why they are made into an issue and called mean? Sense of humors are a good thing, especially at the end of a long election cycle. :-)
Edit: spelling/
After watching the Romney monologue last night, I predicted that the Team Obama, including the MSM, would try 2 portray Mitt as being mean! There'll be NO crocodile tears shed by me! After every destructive thing Obama has done to America, I have no pity or mercy 4 the Anti-American in Chief!
I agree Bill. Its ok for Obama to send his surrogates out and call the Gov names every day- but when Romney makes a few jokes that actually had truth in them - he's called a big meanie. Oh well. He wants to win this election, and I say it's good to see some back bone.
That was just what reports have said that it was more of a "Pro Romney crowd" I assume because of President Obama's contentious relationship with the Catholic church caused by that contraception battle waged due to Obamacare mandating that Catholic Employers offer contraception in their insurance plans. Most of the members of the media that were there were Catholic themselves or gave to Catholic charities! No I love the idea of of having a night like this but having a sense of humor means being able to laugh AT YOURSELF as much as at someone else's expense ya know! that's why I think his speech missed the mark!! Go back and watch other years of this event and you will see Mitt's speech was way way more political and attacking and less self deprecating than any other candidate that has ever spoke at the dinner!! and I am not even a huge Obama fan personally im just sayin...
You can have your 'pity party' for Obama if U like but I have no pity for someone that has been so vile, so deceitful, and perpetrated such disastrous attacks on the American Constitution & th good name of America itself!
The media leans democrat, and I dont know what "reports" you read that said it was a Romney crowd.
Lets be honest, both men didn't write their own jokes. They were there to break the ice, and have a little bit of fun, which it looks like everyone did. In my opinion Gov Romney used the platform to say things that he thought he could say gently, with a smile on his face that had truth in them. I cant say for certain, but I think I remember Obama raking Mc Cain over the coals in regard to the economy w/ his jokes at the event in 2008. He knew that issue was going to win the election for him and he used it to his advantage at the dinner.
The word that comes to mind is...class. Mitt has it as does Ann as well. What a fine family we will be blessed with as our first family.
