Eric Holder finally responded today to Rand Paul’s question about whether the president has the power to make drone strikes on American citizens who are terrorist non-combatives:

Now how hard was that?

Rand Paul responds:

Good on him.

UPDATE: More from Rand Paul:

Today, following a historic 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor that ended early this morning, Sen. Rand Paul received correspondence from the White House regarding the legality and constitutionality of the U.S. government using lethal force, including drone strikes, on Americans and in U.S. territory. Sen. Paul’s repeated correspondence to President Obama’s nominee to be CIA director, John Brennan, was finally answered today, in part, with the following response from Attorney General Eric Holder: “‘Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?’ The answer to that question is no.”

“This is a major victory for American civil liberties and ensures the protection of our basic Constitutional rights. We have Separation of Powers to protect our rights. That’s what government was organized to do and that’s what the Constitution was put in place to do,” Sen. Paul said. “I would like to congratulate my fellow colleagues in both the House and Senate and thank them for joining me in protecting the rights of due process.”

WHY LIMIT THE DISCUSSION TO DRONES? Include ANY and ALL LETHAL MEANS; nobody has the "right" to kill ANYBODY on American soil (or elsewhere) who is not an imminent threat or who has not been convicted of a capital offense.

What's so hard about that?

Also, folks, please go to the EPIC site below and sign an anti-drone petition:

Thanks.

If there is any more obvious evidence of the lack of leadership in Obama's Presidency, one only has to look at his choice for Attorney General. It is not a great test of Intelligence on anyone's part to figure out this man is an absolute Idiot. He proves it, every time he opens his mouth to speak.

Like other commenters here, one has to wonder what Holder/Bamster intend with such a parsed denial. The meaning of "combat?"

Well, Rand Paul not only stood up for an important principle, but he also got results as well. A lot more than I can say for McCain or Graham.

He has to pay his dues if he wants the GOP to stand behind him for the nomination. Last night, it felt like he was there more for self-promotion than to fight for 'the cause'. He's been bought and paid for since the FL primary against Crist.

Sen Pauls statement

“I would like to congratulate my fellow colleagues in both the House and Senate and thank them for joining me in protecting the rights of due process.” was far too gracious, IMO. He didn't get nearly enough support from his colleagues.

The ones that did support him, thank you.

"not engaged in combat"... What does that mean exactly? Knowing the way the Democrats and this administration twist the meaning of words... What is their definition of "combat"? We are fighting them in a way by being on this board... is typing this a form of "combat" in their view?

PatrickHenrysBody
PatrickHenrysBody

By the way Zero and his able cadre of wordsmiths slant things, it could mean anything in their jaundiced eyes. Yes, we are engaged in written combat, so that could be interpreted as an action deserving of a drone strike. Make sure you do your typing in a Starbucks, so you can take out a few of Zero's voters with you. j/k :-P

Well define combat.

He also didn't mention if a drone would be used on someone who is considered a threat to the state.

These snarky politicians are rewriting Webster's.

Holder - still had to add some snark to the response. Additional question?

Well let him. Rand Paul, and we got our answer.

Personally, I would not be happy with that snarky little letter at all. "It has NOW come to my attention (condescending) that you have asked AN ADDITIONAL QUESTION"

What an idiot - it isn't an "additional question" it's the very core of what Paul was asking. And he knows it. Rather than acknowledging that he writes a snarky little thing like that^

Moreover, it doesn't really clarify that much in my mind. "An American not engaged in combat" - do we have a precise and/or widely-acknowledged definition of that?

Wouldn't you normally see language as in "under no circumstances."

et cetera.

I thought you would have had the video of him saying Hooray, not some politico person tweeting about it..

Anyway you know the sincerely part of this letter is full of crap!!

The REAL victory was:

a) Showing what leaders look like.

b) The swell in pride and enthusiasm that Rand Paul's filibuster caused in Conservatives. It appears to have revived the Tea Party, based on many tweets and blog postings.

c) The clear revelation of just who is and isn't the enemy in the Republican party. Yes, specifically, Lindsey Graham and John McLame are enemies. Mike Lee and Ted Cruz in particular are first class heroes. Kudos to Johnny-come-lately: Mark Rubio.

He also managed to bolster his status among many conservatives and he got the lying administration to come clean on their intent... he spoiled their fun.

Congratulations and thank you Rand Paul.

NOTE: I still think every single Republican should vote against Brennan... but we all know that ain't gonna happen. :(

Interested to seeing the roll call..

Man...

Kerry, Hagel, Jack Lew, Brennan... all of these people are moronic incompetents for these positions. All "yes" men. All pretense by Obama is gone isn't it? He hates America, wants to destroy it and now has the right (wrong) men in place to follow through doesn't he? And the blind, deaf and dumb Republicans all followed along and let this monster have his way.

Most of the Republicans aren't even useful as speed bumps.

PatrickHenrysBody

Perhaps because he is a perfect fit in the administration of Zero?

I think there is more to it. Every bad over aggressive policy, even the one's Obama has had to back peddle on, originated with Brennan. He is one dangerous Neanderthal.

Ironically my parents and grand parents had to worry about communists in their government. Our generation gets to worry about Muslims in our government which is nothing more than communism under the guise of religion.

He is Mr. Benghazi. That gun running operation was Brennan's. He's the one with all of the answers. Just one more denial from O and Hill. They probably didn't know much about it. Petraeus knew little or nothing about it. Nobody knew anything except the CIA guys who just knew their guys were in trouble. The sin was mostly Brennan's. The greater sin was Hill and O not being curious enough to ask questions and stupid enough to make up the story of the infamous video.

Brennan has been angling for the CIA for a while. I pray that his elevation to the job today just ends in hell fire because that is the way this is heading. Holder and Brennan, two bad hombres. Bring them down before America goes down.

Laurel
Laurel

It is possible that he is. He spent years in the ME.

PatrickHenrysBody
PatrickHenrysBody

There could be more to it. His over-aggressiveness is what Zero needs. Zero's modus operandi is to push the envelope to see how far he can go until he has to backpedal. If he has to backpedal, all he has to do is simply place the blame elsewhere...and he has his propagandist arm to help him achieve his objective. I wonder if there's any validity to the stories that Brennan is a Muslim. If he is, that makes him all the more dangerous to America...and to Israel.

denbren52

I hate to be cynical but ... this leave open the possibility that an American engaged in combat (please define "combat" because the Obama administration thinks that the Tea Party is a violent enemy.) can still be killed on American soil. It also leaves open the possibility that non-weaponized drones could be used to hunt down Americans who would then be killed by one of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammo being stockpiled by Homeland Security. I don't trust the tyrant and I never will.

colliemum
colliemum

Exactly!

This reply looks good, but it doesn't mean they won't 'no-weaponised' drones to spy on people.

I was elated at first, but on second thoughts I think far more work needs to be done. It must be obvious that this administration has a huge disregard for the Constitution and will wriggle out wherever they can.

But it is a good first step.
