The 01/2013 edition of Imprimis is a killer-diller. To borrow an oft-heard phrase: “If you don’t get it you don’t get it.”

Imprimis – IN 1951, William F. Buckley, Jr., a graduate of Yale the year before, published his first book, God & Man at Yale. In the preface, he described two ideas that he had brought with him to Yale and that governed his view of the world:

“I had always been taught, and experience had fortified the teachings, that an active faith in God and a rigid adherence to Christian principles are the most powerful influences toward the good life. I also believed, with only a scanty knowledge of economics, that free enterprise and limited government had served this country well and would probably continue to do so in the future.”

The body of the book provided evidence that the academic agenda at Yale was openly antagonistic to those two ideas—that Buckley had encountered a teaching and a culture that were hostile to religious faith and that promoted collectivism over free market individualism. Rather than functioning as an open forum for ideas, his book argued, Yale was waging open war upon the faith and principles of its alumni and parents.

Liberal bias at American colleges and universities is something we hear a lot about today. At the time, however, Buckley’s exposé was something new, and it stirred national controversy. The university counterattacked, and Yale trustee Frank Ashburn lambasted Buckley and his book in the pages of Saturday Review magazine.

Whether God & Man at Yale had any effect on Yale’s curriculum is debatable, but its impact on American political history is indisputable. It argued for a connection between the cause of religious faith on the one hand, and the cause of free market economics on the other. In a passage whose precise wording was later acknowledged to have been the work of Buckley’s mentor Willmoore Kendall—a conservative political scientist who was driven out of Yale a few years later—Buckley wrote:

“I consider this battle of educational theory important and worth time and thought even in the context of a world situation that seems to render totally irrelevant any fight except the power struggle against Communism. I myself believe that the duel between Christianity and atheism is the most important in the world. I further believe that the struggle between individualism and collectivism is the same struggle reproduced on another level.”

Greatest quote of the article by William F. Buckley below. Putting collectivism in the same room as atheism when you understand that both take away our liberties. Whereas a belief in and following God and supporting invididualism protects our liberties.

Wonder how much sexual assaults have increased on campus' where they have "Sex Week" and promote porn and all that?

I am wondering what colleges now could be recommended for their strong conservative education? Private Christian is a start, but which ones are proven?

Today, my teenager, with whom I have had discussions about everything liberal lately, went with me to my favorite used bookstore after church. It was a great opportunity. I was able to walk the aisles with him and point out a lot of "old books" that are the sources of "old ideas", such as origins of movements in history and in the church. We found some that intersected with some of his own interests. In the back of my mind, I thought about the education Mark Levin had and talked about yesterday, and I promised myself we (my son and I) would make this visit again, and soon, and I would find such books as Mark suggested, and 911 here today, and expose ourselves to these original, "old ideas" as well.

It was a discovery for my son, a great connection between us, and gave me great hope for more such opportunites to connect him with great teachings in a new way.

So thx for these suggestions.

Some young people are fighting back and pushing against the hookup culture. There are decency/modesty/abstinence groups being formed on college campuses now.

Good for them!

Two things have to happen in our society.

1) Parents must school their children to have the courage of the convictions they taught at home, give them the back up and tools needed, and send them to confront academic idiocy wherever it is presented. Yes I said CONFRONT! Because if you confront them you make them live by their own rules which they can't do.

2) The next thing that must happen is stop going to these schools and going into debt to be stuck on stupid. would any of these schools have this prestige if their enrollment continually dropped year after year? Somehow I doubt it.

Hot Air has an interesting article (link) by Thomas Friedman. "3 Cheers for on-line Universities". They seem to be really catching on, and are much less expensive plus (at least it seems to me) much less opportunity to brain-wash our kids.

And THIS is why we need to take our educational system back!

Yale University – Yale was patterned after the design of Harvard. The founders of Yale were authorized to create an institution where “youth may be instructed in the Arts and Sciences who through the blessing of Almighty God may be fit for employment both in the Church and Civil State.” Three Yale graduates were: the inventor Eli Whitney, the educator and author Noah Webster, and the patriot Nathan Hale who just before being hanged by the British said, “I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Harvard University – Reverend John Harvard gave half his property and his entire library to start this world renowned institution. Harvard’s original motto was: “For Christ and the Church.” The goal of a Harvard education was to establish Christian principles in the minds of students according to the Word of God. In addition to ministers, Harvard also produced some of the greatest statesmen of the 1700s, such as, John Hancock, John Adams, and Samuel Adams.

Princeton University – Reverend Jonathan Dickson, Princeton’s first president, once said, “Cursed be all learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ.” Established during the First Great Awakening, the college was a direct result of spiritual revival and a recommitment of the early colonies to further a degree of excellence in education. Later, under President Jonathan Edwards, the school took on a missionary zeal to minister to the American Indians. Early Princeton graduates included James Madison, Aaron Burr and six members of he first United States Congress.

Boston University – “Learning, Virtue, and Piety” is the motto of one of the finest of the many learning institutions in Boston. Today, Boston University is perhaps the most strategic school in the United States since it has more international students than any other University. Many of these internationals are being trained to move into positions of leadership in their native lands. A revival among international students at Boston University would impact the entire world.

Columbia University – This college was first founded by a royal charter in the vestry room of the Trinity Church schoolhouse in New York City. First known as King’s College, this school was a center of non-denominational learning. The first advertisement of the college disclaims any intention of imposing “on the scholars the peculiar Tenants of any particular Sect of Christians; but to inculcate upon their tender minds, the great Principles of Christianity and Morality, in which true Christians of each Denomination are generally agreed.” Some early Columbia graduates include Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and Governor Morris.

...and there are many others....

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, 911infidel and trs.

The full article has been duly bookmarked, as it serves as yet another indicator how far we in the Western world have sunk into decadence.

Worse - while our oh-so-liberal politicians and LyingScreamingMeejah proclaim that we're doing good in 'bringing democracy' to the poor benighted Ayrabs and the rest of them, wallowing in their own feelings of being nice, they totally overlook the misery and violence their cultural marxism has brought to the developing world.

By screaming 'colonialism' and 'imperialism' at every turn, they encouraged the newly constituted countries to turn their backs on good governance.

But dealing with the mess this, and they, created? Oh no. Can't be done ... certainly not as long as students and academia is more interested in moral relativism and sex weeks than good governance and fighting corruption.

My older son earned a Master's Degree from Yale in 1994. He has not been the same since.

We can not discuss politics in any form. I believe that he was "brain-washed" to an extent at Yale and his undergrad college in Vermont, also very liberal.

When he left for college at age 18 he carried a New Testament in his shirt or coat pocket. Now he no longer attends church. I am saddened by this. I love him so much and worry about him all the time.

He and his wife live in liberal New York City and I sometimes feel like they are in another world. We see each other at holidays and refrain from political dialogue.

That is heartbreaking. Our kids seem to be from another planet. A big chunk is missing if we can't have a genuine conversation about issues that we differ on. I also saw a change in our son, he got his Masters from UConn. Not exactly a Liberal bastion, but bad enough. He now claims to be a Libertarian, but we get into some heated discussions. I pretty much stay away from the subject also.

Let's hope for better days.

anneinarkansas

I hear you loud and clear. My kids grew up in Massachusetts and have many good friends who went to UConn....all turned into flaming liberals. Odd, as they grew up in a conservative, Republican town.

My younger son has an MBA from Boston College. He married an uber-liberal girl from Harvard who grew up in Seattle where they now live. He has always been a moderate but she "works on him." Having two kids has made him think more about a lot of things and he did support Romney. He lived in Cambridge,MA when Romney was governor and thought he did a good job.

Yes, indeed, let us hope for better days. Obama has this country more divided that I have seen in my lifetime...I will be77 in April.

I feel your frustration, anne - likewise with my sister and brother and college. Sad thing is that our Dad never had a degree and worked his butt off to pay for their tuition so they could enjoy an opportunity for better work and pay.

He ran out of $$ when it came to my education (thank God), and I've done quite well learning my trade "in the trenches."

I have finally cut them off because contact with them is too painful knowing how their willful ignorance is destroying the opportunities of our children to have what we did.

Don't feel too alone in your situation. It has happened to so many. We send them off to college to have a better life that ours was, only to find out we aren't on the same planet anymore. They grew up... but not necessarily smart or wise.

Don't give up on him.

warpmine
warpmine

On the contrary, give up on him and tell him so and why. If he cares to listen sit down and go through the history of man and Nature's god before and after reconciliation. Show him the evidence of the truth which will be his only salvation. He currently lives in a place that shuns the Truth and embraces everything that is antithetical of the Word of God. It's Saddam with all the temptations and rewards for sin.

He's dead, grieve and put it behind you. Say a prayer that he may receive the light each day. Perhaps he will reach out to you later after the horror becomes apparent but he won't be reasonable until that time. Until that time, he is the lost son.

warpmine
warpmine

However, he does employ tough love for strategy and more than once and this is what's needed here. Why worry yourself over spilled milk when you can absolve yourself from a child's bad decisions in life. Pray for him/her to come around and see the truth but other than that, it's entirely up to the child. We are talking about an adult here in this case so let them learn the hard way. The Lord will give mercy when it's due and we must be comforted with knowing that.

sjmom

I disagree because God in His mercy never gives up on us. Therefore, how can we give up on another?

I will never give up on him, that is for sure!

One hope is with his wife. Her family is Roman Catholic and they share our feelings. We are Presbyterian.

We pray!

Prayer is the most powerful force on earth. I know so many families that are going through the same problem with their children. On top of being in a liberal environment, the rules in universities and laws in general are more favorable to anti Christ sinners. Even sin is denied, as if the word itself wasn't in the dictionary.

This is going on all over the world, and it evolved at the same time. To me, that is the definition of a conspiracy----the same thing that happens at the same time everywhere. Not coincidence.

Some people have to learn the hard way. I believe we're very close to the end times. Maybe not by 2020, but soon. When I see the build up of Russia and China, Russia notwanting to renew their agreement with the U.S. regarding nuclear weapons, and Russia's close alliance with Iran, and the promotion of sin inFollywood movies, in television productions, using comedy and sex to send a message, and many entertainment celebrities admitting to having to sell their souls to participate in the influencing of people for big money, then I know we are in a fight between good and evil. Our lawmakers are disciples of evil and are pushing believers of Jesus Christ to isolation, muslim immigration with all the potential dangers emanating from the mosques, etc then we know the enemy within has arrived.

These are the forces our young people have to adapt to while trying to retain their upbringing parents have invested themselves in in love and sacrifice.

When I visit my daughter and her family, I see family prayer, including prayer prior to meals, church going every Sunday, and this is a good example for visitors. She is not shy about recognizing her faith in front of others, even saying grace in restaurants.

We must pray and be role models and the Holy Spirit will help us.

I was encouraged when I saw so many young people marching against abortion last week. These are the devils last years, so we can expect challenges to our faith, Jesus said His church will prevail. One day He will remove the devil from the earh for 1,000 years, and we won't have the temptations we have coming from him today.

Let's use the promise Jesus gave us; "when two or more are gathered in my name, they can request anything and my heavenly Father will grant their request." This action will reinforce our prayers. Ask your Pastor to have the congregation pray together for our young people, so they will keep the faith, or return to it.

William F Buckley was an extremely intelligent man and I remember hearing him a few times. Times may change but good philosphy does not. I love the last paragraph and especially the part about the "duel between Christianity and atheism being the most important in the world". The war has been between Heaven and Hell since the beginning and the ending never changes; God and His people win. Praise His Name!

Evil always conceals it's aim by making false accusations against the truth from which it conveniently hides itself from it's followers.

The most important fact is to be in Heaven for eternity....trillions and trillions of our years, and in a timeless universe, being sons and daughters of the Father, living in our own mansions.

I wouldn't trade a few decades of sin on earth for that kind of eternal reward. It's a bad investment.

If you do, you are naive.

Universities have indoctrinated students to socialism and atheism for decades. We are seeing the fruits of that effort today, in so many ways.

Jesus said our struggles were not against flesh and blood but demons and spiritual principalities. (paraphrasing)

In a world where so many leaders don't want to recognize the existence of sin, we can easily see the consequences all around us.

Thank God, there are faithful people in the world who love Him.

Argeed. You can see the struggle when you look in to politics when any candidate comes forth wit Christian values and espouses them he is vehemently attacked by the left for trying to take away this or that and almost run off the stage. If he doesn't bring those values up then it's not as big as an issue. Sad that that is how it is now. But I suppose if everything was peachy here then Christ really wouldn't have a battle to fight at the end.

"The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:1-7 NIV)

it's happened before. Look at Sodom and Gomorrah, granted things didn't end well for them but the complete lack of morality and turn from Christ is nothing new. Look at Muslim countries, they try and hide the fact like they are all virturous however they despise women and when given the chance rape and molest women and children, just ask Laura Logan. Then they blame the woman for the men not being able to control themselves.
