Krauthammer: Republicans should stay away from serious entitlement reform

Krauthammer says that “if Republicans propose serious entitlement reform they’ll get crushed”, meaning that it won’t get enacted and it will certainly get demagogued to death. What he says they should do instead is target the entire budget by saying that they should go back to 2008 spending levels, forcing the bureaucrats to make a back room deal where both sides take a hit on this, like the tax deal. Otherwise to propose it outright, without a deal, would cost Republicans too much politically.

One thing is for sure, that if Republicans can’t get any significant cuts, then we definitely better get gridlock.

Extend the Bush tax cuts, go back to Bush spending levels…it would be like Obama never happened, except for the financial and health care reforms. I’d be happy if by the time Obama leaves office in 2013 the country is exactly as he found it in 2009.

I hope you mean back to Bush 2001-2006 age spending. I could do without TARP and the like.

    • Extremely Right

I’d be happy if Obama leaves office period. And exactly how doesn’t really matter.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=504624590 Chris G.

        Yes, it DOES matter how…..

        • Freedom2010

          No it DOES NOT!

    • Anonymous

You realize that extending the Bush tax cuts and going back to Bush era spending levels is only going to grow the deficit, right? Maybe at a smaller rate, but Bush came in with a surplus and left with a massive deficit.

  • Extremely Right

Give this man a job at MSNBC.

  • zytekfan

Sorry, but to reduce the deficit by a significant amount, entitlement programs need to go too. Some, of course, will remain, but if we can peel away a large number, then maybe there can be a significant savings.

We already know defense spending has to come down, but we cannot get out of this huge deficit by cutting defense spending alone.

  • jamesdawon

We need cuts, not Bush spending levels.

    • Bsm138

At this point they are one in the same

  • Goldni007

Once again CK is overly concerned with the political fallout of it all. He’s obsessing with how the corrupt bastards are gonna report how the House of Ryan is gonna budget (or not budget rather). Memo to Republicans: We got your back. Cut like Edward Scizzorhands. Put the brakes on this freaking thing now!

Memo to CK: I respect your intellect and your savvy all things D.C. but get out of town for awhile. And when things really do start to hit the fan in about 3-4 weeks from now, don’t second guess the Republicans publically! We don’t need to eat our own.

I agree, Chuck needs to take a vacation.

      • Freedom2010

He’s appearing on more and more interviews though, so his marketing strategy is working.

    • Stephen

I’m thinking the “don’t rock the boat” meme is the the reason Republicans lost power – when conservatives SHOULD have been publically second guessing the fiscal irresponsibility, arrogance and weak, RINO leadership of the GOP.

IMHO, CK is on target. He didn’t say don’t make the cuts – he’s saying do it in a way the Dems and LSM can’t use it as a hammer to pound us with. That’s just good sense. I would be more worried about being UNDER-concerned with political fallout at this point – and blowing a golden opportunity in ’12. Just sayin’.

Is the tail wagging the dog or the dog wagging the tail.

People take note … whose calling the shots here … Republicans or the People.

It is the people who are suppose to tell their representatives what to cut.

Did we just elect republicans to do (or cut) as they please or did we elect republicans to do as we tell them (or we send them packing in 2 years). They are to cut what we tell them to cut. Period. On January 3rd, start firing off your letters, faxes, e-mails, tweets, etc. telling your rep. what to cut. It’s all hands on deck or we go back to the same old horse and pony show.

Either we stop listening to the pundits telling us what congress is going to do for us or we start telling congress what we want them to do for us. And demand it!

Media seems to think that the politicians control the people. Well, politicians do control the people until the people realize they don’t. Remember it’s 545 congressmen vs 308,000,000 peeps. Again, I ask, who is going to control who?

Are you going to continue to listen to pundits, or are you going to start telling your congress rep. what you want and that you expect him to deliver or he’s fired?

Good government is no spectator sport. It requires ACTIVE participation. FOREVER!!!

Krauthammer (lately) is a proponent of ‘let’s get along’…smoothin things over, this might be best…well, HELL NO! I frankly don’t GIVE A DAMN Chuck about being mamby pamby anymore, NO get along smoothly, NO ‘it might be nice’…or ‘what does it mean politically??’ skewse my french ‘F**K ‘em’….I am DONE with the way things are run, I AM DONE with the ‘rules’ in Congress to pass legislation (or ‘gas’ as it is lately)…no, sorry CHUCK?! we’re gonna pull that football…just when you make a run for it! NO MORE hope, no more change…no, the way things have BEEN done are over. That’s all she wrote…back to the Constitution, Patriots will stand!

    • Diamondback

I’ve frankly lost confidence in the people’s courage to stand up and defend their rights and constitution.

A lot of them DO talk a good bit.

      Blah, blah, blah.

Did they boycott flying over the holidays to protest the infringement of their 4th and 5th Amendment rights by the TSA/DHS? NO! They meekly lined up and submitted to Nude body scans and sexual assault pat downs before exercising their fundamental, human right to travel.

Have they protested the UNCONSTITUTIONAL “DUI checkpoints” and NOW we have judges on site of the checkpoints to issue warrants to force citizens who refuse breath tests to undergo a blood tests!

      EXCUSE ME BUT …

GOT PROBABLE CAUSE YOUR TYRANT ARSEHATS?

I quit flying in Nov. 2004 and won’t fly again in my lifetime I suppose BECAUSE I REFUSE TO SUBMIT to their usurpations of our fundamental, unalienable rights.

When Americans begin to show a willingness to undergo HARDSHIP rather than submitting to usurpations of our rights, liberties and Constitution, then I’ll be happy to retract this attitude.

It’s disgusting how meek, humble and submissive Americans have become.

  • Tyler

I’m not too sure how serious entitlement cuts could be politically bad for the Rs. The hardcore conservatives want to see them and many of the independent people who started and who later joined the Tea Party folks REALLY want our spending to be cut.

People as a whole just need to accept that we can’t afford to fund every single American’s retirement and healthcare no matter how long you want to wait. Get rid of all of it now. You may be hated for it, but it needs to be done and those who aren’t already weak from being parasites to the government will be resilient and recover from the lack of “free money,” then move on to eventually build back up a more strong nation which does not need “big brother” or the “nanny state” to hold its hand every step of the way.

Who are they going to get “crushed” by? The big spending idiots are going to be thrown out anyway. For the next 10 years we will be cleaning house. I am sick and tired of politics as usual. Status Quo is not an option.

  • Han Solo

Easy, The republican house should just start w ACROSS THE BOARD 30% CUT.

They can then deflect anything by saying? Hey, its across the board, we are not playing favorites.

    • Diamondback

Yea, and disbanding and defunding ALL agencies, departments and programs that don’t have a foundation in the enumerated powers listed in Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.

Let Krauthammer say whatever he wants to say. Then BLAST him. FOX NEWS needs to realize we turn off O’Reilly,Shep,Bret and next will be this idiot. I thought it was bad having Alan Colmbs sneering face opposite Hannity. It all was down hill from that point. It is not intelligent on my part to have higher blood pressure every night. I love politics so I will shift these people.
I started to watch FOX Business Channel but I will turn that off too if it gets a heavy left handle.
The Tea Party Movement’s positions need a forum not a Krauthammer critical smack down. McDonnell and Palin are much more intelligent than this pseudo intellect. There is no reason to hold him up.

Once again, krazy kraut dives head-first into the shallow end of the logic pool.

  • Chief

It sounds like Charles is receiving fewer and fewer invites to the DC cocktail party circuit.

    Typical DC Republican.

Actually that’s not fair. Most DC Republicans were never stupid enough to work for Jimmy Carter.

Sorry Chuck, but I’ve watched enough football to know that the “prevent” defense will cost you the game everytime. It’s the same in politics. The GOP needs to stay aggresive on their message and their agenda.

If we wait for the Democrats, the media, and the DC pundits to all approve of the GOP’s actions then we have already lost.

Krauthammer should apply with the Obama administration as the “Go along to get along” Czar. He would do a wonderful job.

if the American people do not have the will to make the necessary changes, then how can we expect our elected Representatives to do it?

    we are doomed.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QHIB3HSTHJ6B7QZE6HGU6AMTYE Josh

I agree. The media (Fox Included) need to understand that the people have already decided that change is necessary. Stop telling us what we can and can’t handle. The country is changing for the better IMO.

And I think Krauthammer needs to stay away from the Wild Turkey.
