Left is smearing Mourdock over his comments on abortion even in instances of rape

The left is really attacking Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock for comments he made in a recent debate about abortion. Here’s the comments:

You know, this is that issue that every candidate for federal, or even state office, faces. And I, too, certainly stand for life. I know there are some who disagree, and I respect their point of view. But I believe that life begins at conception. The only exception I have, to have an abortion, is in that case of the life of the mother. I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.

When I first heard that I knew exactly what he meant. The left is suggesting that Mourdock said that rape is intended by God but that’s simply ridiculous. He was talking about life being a gift from God and how life has purpose because it is a gift from God, despite it happening in such horrible situations. He was basically arguing why he believes every life is precious, despite the circumstances through which it came to be. And because of that he simply can’t advocate for abortion.

This isn’t rocket science, but that doesn’t stop Democrats from trying to smear him (via WaPo):

Democrats immediately pounced on the comment, suggesting that Mourdock was saying God intended for rapes to occur.

“The God I believe in and the God I know most Hoosiers believe in, does not intend for rape to happen — ever,” Mourdock’s opponent, Rep. Joe Donnelly (D), said in a statement. “What Mr. Mourdock said is shocking, and it is stunning that he would be so disrespectful to survivors of rape.”

Mourdock has since clarified his statement to make it crystal clear for the intellectually challenged:

“God creates life, and that was my point,” Mourdock said in the statement. “God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that he does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick.”

Despite that the left then tried to attack Romney over Mourdock’s statement because Romney recently cut an ad for Mourdock. But the Romney campaign responded:

“Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock’s comments, and they do not reflect his views,” Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said.

But while Romney distanced himself Tuesday, by Wednesday morning, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas) gave Mourdock a vote of support.

I know it was a weak statement by the Romney campaign, however I give them more leeway on this because they are trying to win this very tight presidential race. That said, NRSC’s John Cornyn stood up for Mourdock:

“Richard and I, along with millions of Americans – including even Joe Donnelly – believe that life is a gift from God,” Cornyn said. “To try and construe his words as anything other than a restatement of that belief is irresponsible and ridiculous.”
