Lt. Gen. Tom Mcinerney asked “are we brain-dead?” and says that we should have had ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) assets over Libya before the 9/11 attacks ever happened, especially given the fact that radical Islamists were told by Al-Qaeda chief Zawahiri to take out Americans in retribution for our killing of Abu Yahya al-Libi over the summer.

But the most disturbing part of this he says is that during the 9/11 attacks we didn’t even try to save to save our people in Libya, that we didn’t do anything. In fact he goes on to say that whoever gave the “stand down” order to our forces at the annex in Benghazi is responsible for killing Ambassador Stevens and Sean Smith because he believes it’s highly possible that the small force from the Annex could have disrupted the attack and likely saved our Stevens and Smith.

When people realize that the GOP is doing nothing but blocking the President to quiet their rapid base of racists, nut jobs and conspiracy theorists, the better. McCain an angry, bitter old fool. Absolutely no grounds to block Rice, the only scandal is how the GOP abused this tragic event for political gain.

Petraeus killed their conspiracy meme already. That’s dead in the water. The facts aren’t backing them up. Suggesting that this “cover up” (NOT proven, there is not even any factual reason to suggest this other than political dreams of a deeply EMBARRASSED party) is worsetergate demonstrates how far Republicans have gone off the rails in their attempt to get one good smear on this President. Not going to happen.

Withholding assistance. Some defenders of the administration issued the following challenge: “So what would be the motivation for withholding assistance to the ambassador and others under attack in the Benghazi compound and the nearby annex?” Motive?. Well, maybe what happened was part of an ill conceived plan to allow the ambassador to be captured as a step toward facilitating a prisoner exchange for the blind sheik. The problem is the ambassador died in the assault. This possible scenario seems to fit many of the events leading up to the 9/11/12 event, e.g., the earlier bombing attacks on the U.S. consulate, attacks on the Red Cross that drove them from the area, and the earlier evacuation of the British from their consulate. These events surely demonstrated the active security threat by Islamic extremists in the Benghazi area. So why was the American ambassador in the area without a sufficient security detail? Without Marine Guards? Not saying this is what happened, but it provides a possible "supposed motivation" for what happened. That is, a possible way to comply with Muslin Brotherhood (a.k.a., Islamic extremists) demands to free the blind sheik. Kind of has the same smell as the “Fast and Furious” gun running scandal and its stone walling and cover up. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s finally disclosed.

Though I do not consider myself qualified to pass judgement on those in military leadership, i.e. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commanding General, AFRICOM, but as retired military I cannot for the life of me understand why these leaders are not showing their disgust for the decision not to support an operation to at least provide assistance to the Ambassador and those brave souls who list their lives, by resigning their positions.

Is it the political correct atmosphere that so envelopes them that they have become immune to such blatant dereliction of duty?

Why do I say that? Well, given my experience with 26 years in the Army, I am well aware of the standards that they would have held me responsible should I have been so neglectful in protecting my most important assets, my people.

Ask anyone who has served that has lost anyone in combat the consequences on their soul. Though I cannot relate to such a thing, thank God, but the ones I know who have, it has blemished their soul and it is a mark they carry for the rest of their lives.

So it is this reason, who these men/women are in charge of such commands, stand by and not let their voices be heard because of such atrocities and incompetence to happen that I'm utterly appalled at our military leadership in our armed forces today. Do we have no shame?

I could go on with other instances of incompetence within our armed forces these past fourteen years since I retired, but it is not relevant to this thread, but what is, is what incompetence has permeated the ranks has now shown itself by its fruit and the fruit is rotten.

I wish the Honorable CIA Director, General Petraeus should resign and come forward and tell We, the People, what happened and that Obama allegedly told him to send NO help and allow Americans to be murdered. The General is a man of Honor, and telling the truth is the Honorable thing to do. His loyalty may prevent him from doing so, but his loyalty should be with The People.

What makes this even more damning is they had assets overhead in the form of a AC-130U Specter gunship and refused to let it fire.

From the Fox news expose we learned this: "The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly requested back-up support from a Spectre gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights."

Pay special attention to that statement. The security officer was painting a target with a laser designator. You don’t do that unless the AC-130 is close enough to acquire the target. The gunship was there, otherwise there is absolutely no point in painting the target in the middle of a firefight.

And now two different sources are confirming my suspicions: http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Peace/2012/10/27/U-S-Had-Two-Drones-AC-130-Gunship-and-Targets-Painted-In-Benghazi-But-Obama-Didn-t-Pull-The-Trigger

I disagree with the claim that whoever gave the "stand down" order is "responsible for killing the ambassador", just as I would disagree with the claim that a policeman who fails to protect someone from a murderer is "responsible" for the death of the victim.

The jihadists are the ones responsible for killing the ambassador, just as a murderer is responsible for the death of the victim.

It's just emotional claptrap to say otherwise.

The employment of super-sonic aircraft is not a choice that should have been made. With no ordnance hanging and only flying above the area with afterburner, on station flights would have been only 40 minutes. I have been to many air shows, this one, in Libya, would have been just one more. In the Muslim world, this would have been a huge sign of weakness! I worked in a Muslim nation embassy, I am afraid I know of what I speak!

Obama did not response because it is international law to provide security for the embassy, this is done by the host nation, in this case, Libya. By doing what it seems would have been required, Obama would be taking unilateral action, without international approval, which is exactly what Obama has been working against doing from day 1!

He also damn sure did not want to have another "Desert 1" that Carter had, just prior to the election with Reagan. Should operators be deployed from Italy, they would have been in Benghazi in about 3.5 hours. There would have been losses, as in any operation, especially one planned on the fly.

The Operators are never the problem, it is always the Officers and Politicians that fail to respond. These operators know what they were facing and would go into that situation to a man!

Obama is a failure as a President and as a Commander in Chief! Vote Romney, Please!

Or maybe the stand down limited the casualties to just a few instead of setting off an even worse series of events. Its impossible to know for sure how the alternative scenario would have played out but everyone is entitled to their opinion. So here we have a stark contrast between a horrible incident that happened in real time and a Utopian alternative reality made up hindsight. Anyone can do that.

A laser-painted target is a very accurate target for our weapons. Blowing up that target would have likely ended the battle. Collateral damage would be very limited, but totally worth the risk because WE WERE UNDER ATTACK.

To hell with worrying about how it's seen by the locals.

In closing this evening, my only comment would be that it appears that some of the lame stream media, are jumping ship. It would appear that too much bullshit does cause indigestion, at some point.

Well, this post was obviously, hands down, the post of the evening. Thanks, Scoop. You seem to have the ability to always inspire our emotions.

Benghazi. What a tragedy. What a failure of leadership. What a perfect example of Obama's leadership, or lack, thereof.

What an incredible thing, we are experiencing right now. We are being attacked on all fronts, by Muslims, and our own President is a Muslim, and is complicit, in the attacks.

And yet, the Americans among us, who voted for him the first time, are perfectly willing to vote for him again. I feel like, Alice in Wonderland. The rabbit is starting to make sense.

If he is elected for a second term, I am seriously considering moving to another country. Costa Rica, Panama, or even Bali.

Four more years of Obama, will destroy this country. There won't be anything left, of the dream of Jefferson, Franklin, and Adams.

Al Sharpton has taken the place of Jefferson. Obama has usurped the wisdom and leadership of Washington.

This country is filled to overflowing, with ignorant, stupid, people. And each and every one of them has the right to vote. God help us.

But even IF Panetta did give the actual kill order for Bin Laden, he couldn't have done it without WH authorization. So in the case of Benghazi, the same is true and the president is STILL guilty! He could've given an order but instead, being the little punk he is, gave an order to stand down.

Whoever denied proper secutity at the Benghazi consulate prior to the 9/11 attack is directly responsible for the deaths of four Americans. Reactive response is not leadership.

Sober_Thinking

This is easy...

Stevens repeatedly asked for more security assets (before the attack) and was basically told to stop asking.

Security assets were thinned out and some removed.

There were multiple terrorist attacks in the area (Red Cross, British Consulate, 2 on the American Embassy) and Al Queda flags flying from time to time on multiple buildings in the area.

The day of his murder (Sept 11th - Islamic terrorists are freaks about dates and their symbolism), Stevens said again things weren't safe there.

During the attack, three times they asked for help and were refused - even though military assests were close by and they lazed the building where mortars were being launched from.

Obama says the violence was because of a movie but then weeks later, wants to say he always called it "an act of terror" (acts of terror) - but never used the word: terrorist, once. And then references the movie 6 times while speaking to the U.N. - two weeks after the attack.

Obama has Carney, Hillary and Rice go around and blame the movie... and then claims he was always saying it wasn't the movie (since the 12th).

Even today he won't really answer legitimate questions about the attack.

This is so clearly a cover up and Obama has no business being the pResident, let alone running for re-election... he needs to clear the air and man-up. But, being a petulent child, that's too much to ask and it would undoubtedly result in him losing his bid for re-election.

It's my turn for Monday morning quarterbacking, just 'cause I'm so d@mned mad:

1) Requests for added security prior to 9/11 was denied.

2) The Consolate was attacked a little over an hour after the Turkish Consul General left Stevens.

3) Requests to go from the annex to the Consulate (which could have saved the first two men killed) resulted in multiple 'stand down' orders.

4) Requested assistance was denied during the fight of the annex (which would have saved the last two men).

5) The cover excuse of the video was pre-determined (including a rapid creation of an 'apology ad').

Now, conspiracy theory or not, I believe that Obama, through Stevens, was running weapons from Libya to Syria via Turkey (probably why Obama felt added security was not needed, as he was on the side of the insurgents here). Either the conversation between Stevens and the Turkish Consul General went south (and the Turk then notified Obama) or Obama decided seperately that Stevens must go. This would explain the lack of security, the 'stand down' order, the refusal of assistance throughout and an overall resulting action plan of 'just standing by' till it was over.

Obama is more than just complicit in this murder of 4 American men, two of which were outright heroes. His hands are bloody. This cannot be covered up till after the election. The American people must have the answers to this fiasco before election day, as it is paramount to their stopping an evil man from usurping the office of President for another 4 years.

The media fails to do their job (except for FOX and Conservative websites), and the politicians all fail to do their jobs in uncovering this story. If it looks like it will be uncovered before election day, watch for Obama to start screaming Executive Privilege once again. If that happens, we must kick him out immediately, with whatever means we have at our disposal.

It's that important.

When O sat on his lead, and everyone saw Mitt was not a killer, it was all over.

NOW the country is wondering, is Oh-uh-oh really as bad as we on the right said?

WHY YES, he is even worse.

PANETTA, why did you get drawn in to this fiasco? Even though we know you are a major league progressive with Commine ties? Thanks for giving (FORCING ) THE ORDER TO TAKE OUT osama, (YES WE KNOW IT WAS YOU, NOT o), but this protecting o's re-election of a discusting progressive divisive President is going to take down your career too.

Good luck with that !

This may be more of an open thread discussion - it appears Obama's approval rating is tanking as well.

I didn't think this endorsement was too big of a deal at first. But apparently it's the first time the paper has endorsed a GOP candidate in 40 years!

The article seems to allude that the endorsement was more on Romney's ability to turn the economy around. But I wonder if the unfolding of the Benghazi fiasco might also be a factor.
