I LOVE Mark Steyn, the only person worth filling in for Rush in my opinion. I couldn’t get over “…the hobbies one can pursue with a friendly gerbil,” that got me for the rest of the hour, too funny.
He also made a good point throughout the hour, Detroit has been under Big government influence for quite some time, and it has only brought them to ruin.
“Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.”
-Ronald Reagan - Anonymous
His opening today was awesome. One question, five different answers from the U.S. gummint depts to the answer in Egypt. It was a hoot.

That…was both hysterically funny and shockingly sobering all at once. It was like seeing a big bucket of ice water about to be dumped on some poor schmuck when you suddenly have the sickening realization that the poor schmuck is you!
Fantastic commentary, Mr. Steyn. God save us.

Someone go back and research M & M’s videos and see if he EVER was driving a Chrysler in any of them.

Having moved to Detroit from IN. in 1983.
Working at the Ponchtrain hotel at the time.
Detroit WAS in the last throughs of it’s death struggle then.
Colman Young was still running the show then.
You could still find places to eat and go out at night then.
But JUST barley.
Greaktown. Renaissance Center. Tigers Stadium. Hamtramck. MexicanTown.
Not so much now. Mostly ALL DEAD.
Brought to you by the Progressive Democrat party AND the UNIONS.
Thanks, AFL-CIO, SEIU, UAW,… Way to go in DESTROYING a ONCE great AMerican city.
Google “ruined Detroit” or “abandon Detroit” if you do not believe me.
The Chrysler commercial IS A LIE.
If you want to see a DEAD city, go down town on ANY sat.
THIS IS WHAT OBAMA, THE UNOINS AND The Democrat Party have planned for the REST of AMERICA
- osdotf
Obviously Mr. Steyn considers this gentleman to be an example of Detroit’s educational system? Or does Indiana (IN.) get the blame?

As one who grew up a Michigander I can tell you that most everyone outside Detroit would have gladly given it to Canada years ago, freeing us from floating America’s 11th largest city with our tax dollars.

There is no place more exciting than Detroit in America right now. Many people don’t have the will, the drive, the determination, the perserverance, or the courage to take a chance on making something great. Those people would rather wait on the sidelines and taunt, never taking a chance. The pioneers who built America were our first round of national heroes. The pioneers who reenergize, remake, and rebuild Detroit will be our next.

Detroit was the center of car manufacturing in the world. The fact that it even needs rebuilding is a tragedy of such immense proportions that it boggles the mind.

I watched part of a documentary on Reagan last night on HBO. I knew it would be bad because it was after all HBO and Ron Reagan Jr was featured a lot. But even knowing it was going to be bad didn’t prepare me for the lies it told.
According to this documentary, Reagan’s economic policies are responsible for every ill facing every run down, decrepit city in the country today. I don’t know if they ever got to Detroit because I changed the channel after just a couple of minutes of scenes of blight.
All Reagan’s fault.
- no_treble
It’s the Liberal way: Accuse the other side of exactly what you yourself are singularly guilty of. It puts the accused on their heels in defense and distracts and confuses onlookers as well as the accused innocent. Nothing new though… Straight out of the Father of Lies’ own little playbook from way back when.
- Asp1007
… pathetic and completely missing the point of how to rebuild an economy. Chrysler took 9 million dollars of taxpayer money and branded itself. It created a corporate image which is more than necessary to compete in the auto industry. You want to loan a company money? Then encourage them to be successful accept that branding is an important part of business. Furthermore, when you talk about rebuilding a city, you need to motivate the masses – This commercial is a step in the right direction, suggesting to a largely unemployed population that hard work is to be the key to Detroit’s resurrection. While it may be enjoyable to sit in the cheap seats and throw down criticisms of all who put forth effort and new ideas, I (as a very fiscally right wing citizen) applaud these steps forward. I suggest that some people take a step back and examine what truly is the right way forward for the country instead of proclaiming it’s inevitable demise.

You either work for chrysler or own a gerbil or both. Maybe you are just a koolaid drinking moonbat, well thats cool, but Mark Steyn is right on the money. Yeah Mark pays less taxes because he lives in N.H. ( i’m moving there ) the people and the state are great, they work hard and don’t believe in a free lunch. Don’t give stuff away for free. Maybe thats one of the reasons why they have low unemployment.

Is this guy even an American? If he shows up on Jefferson Avenue talking smack about the D with that accent, he’s going to get his butt kicked all the way into Canada.
Look, even post-World War II Europe got American bucks, much of it via the Marshall Plan, and a lot of the recipients hadn’t even been on OUR SIDE! Back when the annual US GDP was well under $300 billion, Europe got a total of $25 BILLION in aid from the end of the war through the end of 1951. In 2009, the US GDP was $14 TRILLION, and this furrin’-talkin’ mo-fo is having a cow over $9 MILLION that he can’t even prove is taxpayer money? Adjusted against the 2009 US GDP, we gave the Krauts something like $75 BILLION after WW II! Maybe you should focus on that cute VW Super Bowl ad when you start feeling pangs in your wallet!
We know what our score is with you, pal: Detroit, along with the other industrial cities of the East and Midwest, was sacrificed on the altar of US diplomacy years ago. Obviously, cheap shots are all Detroit deserves for being the “Arsenal of Democracy,” but here’s a P.S. for you:
Compared to what they get, the states of Michigan and Ohio pay through the nose for FEMA. When that hurricane plows through Miami, it’s strictly states’ rights, pal. Screw you!

Are you even from Detroit? Somehow, I don’t think so.
Detroit is a city that’s been run into the ground. If you don’t know why, you’re definitely not from Detroit. Stupid, $9,000,000.00 advertisements during a superbowl aren’t going to revitalize that worthless city that’s probably no further than a fingernail’s length from receivership (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hhJ_49leBw). Your argument is absolutely the opposite of cogent and coherent. We’re talking about Mark Steyn’s accurate observation of Detroit’s plight, and you’re talking about Europe and how much money they got decades ago, after a world war. Guess what? That’s so irrelevant, it’s stupid. Why don’t you address the rampant illiteracy rate in that stupid city [Detroit]? Why didn’t you address the fact that about 50% of the residents are illiterate? Why don’t you address the fact that once Jerome Patrick Cavanagh came along (the first of the seemingly hereditary democratic mayors), Detroit’s decline into it’s present day began? Why don’t you address the fact that Detroit continues to pay big money to unions and on absolutely irrelevant projects, even as the city continues to literally crumble around the few casinos and Greektown? Or how about how Detroit got a bailout from Lindon Johnson, and was called a model city on what government intervention can do? Instead, you talk crap about your impression of a guy’s speech patterns. I club in Detroit, and used to live there, and I can tell you that stupid car ads that cost more than the average Detroit resident will make in their lives, featuring someone that’s never lived there, and probably drives a foreign car (besides the Chrysler, which is nothing more than a Italian Fiat POS, now), anyway, won’t save that city. I can tell you that a company that chose to pick up stakes and leave that city for Auburn Hills really don’t have much interest in Detroit. I can also tell you that even if everybody suddenly (and stupidly) started buying Fiats (i.e.: “Chryslers”), that’s not really going to profit Detroit, much, considering Chrysler (i.e.: FIAT) doesn’t really have too much going there, anyway, aside from a couple of assembly plants and warehouses.
Nobody sacrificed Detroit, other than Detroit, itself. Detroit is a city filled with idiots that vote for people like Young and Kilpatrick and Bing and Conyers (both of them), completely eschewing Conservative principals, values and politics, in favor of liberality hand-outs.
And look what what their hand-outs and so-called “empowerment zones” got them (assuming you even live anywhere close enough to see Detroit, or that you even venture there, if you are close enough).
Enough with the BS about Mark Steyn, and try to focus on the real problem and issue: DETROIT. Until Detroiters get their heads out of their asses and learn to stop voting democrat, learn to stop using Dick Tracey Rogues Gallery villains as their city councils, and figure out that throwing money at unions isn’t going to solve their problems, things will only get worse, and that ugly, worthless city will finally, and literally, go away, becoming the ghost town it’s well on it’s way to becoming.

To all of you mocking Detroit and Detroiters, 1st thing I will tell you is, when you bash Detroiters you are also bashing people from Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Rochester, Dearborn, Shelby Twp, Macomb Twp, Sterling Heights, Novi, Northville and the Grosse Pointes, now google those cities in Michigan and see the stats of the people that live in these cities. The majority of us are highly educated, conservative, Republicans, who have good jobs, nice homes that are paid for or have timely paid mortgage payments. We are the people that on the weekends and some weeknights drive 20-30 minutes into the city to go to dinner at many of the fine resturants in the city, visit the beautiful NEWER baseball and football stadium, or go to a hockey game, afterall we are hockeytown. There are also many of us that have thriving jobs right in the city!
I will agree that there has been bad choices of mayors in the city, and our past governor, well she is in the past. We had a republican before her, and a new republican after her.
The videos and pictures to show the “real Detroit”, is not the real picture of Detroit, google campus marchus ice skating rink, or compuware, or the riverfront.
As for the only standing theater in Detroit, no the Fox is far from the only standing theater, google Detroit Opera House, Fisher Theater, Masonic Temple theater, also the Fox. We have beautiful venues, resturants, and businesses in Detroit.
Also, Im not a fan of the Unions, my father is an retired engineer from Ford, who was not a union worker. I agree they make to much money, but you cant blame them for the demise of the auto industry that in the motorcity is held high, BLAME THE AMERICANS WHO BUY FOREIGN CARS!
As for the Chrysler ad being paid for by tax dollars, Chrysler is paying back the loan, it was a loan, they have stated that it will be paid back next year totally. And for Eminem, not a huge fan of his music, but he is a big supporter of Detroit and the motorcity.
Now, go and rewatch the commerical, the full 2 minute ad, and let me assure you, that is the beauty of Detroit!
Afterall, are you gonna tell me that New York or Chicago or Los Angeles doesnt have any slummy sections!
Made in Detoit and raised in the Motorcity (Sterling Heights, MI), and proud of it! - http://community.livejournal.com/black_avenger_1/profile Virus-X
Uhh, NO. When they (including myself) mock Detroit, they’re mocking DETROIT. Not “…”nn Arbor, Royal Oak, Rochester, Dearborn, Shelby Twp, Macomb Twp, Sterling Heights, Novi, Northville and the Grosse Pointes…”. Nobody cares about those cities, and nobody’s talking about them. You can interject them in Detroit’s business, all you want, but it won’t work. Detroit’s problems are Detroit’s problems, and the suburbs have nothing to do with it. That, and trying to bring places like Ann Arbor, Shelby, Macomb, etc into it is pure idiocy; they’re not even suburbs of Detroit. Novi, Northville, Plymouth and the like are suburbs of Ann Arbor, not Detroit. By the way: Sterling Heights is not the Motor City. DETROIT, and DETROIT ONLY is the Motor City. You can try gloming onto the name for fame all you want, but it doesn’t work that way. That’s like Private Green from the Army bragging about being from Detroit, when it turned out he was from EAST DETROIT. Which is now called EASTPOINTE, because they didn’t want to be associated with that festering slum that Batman wouldn’t patrol if he had Daredevil, Captain America and Wolverine backing him up.
I club in Detroit every week for quite some time, but if you think that’s going to soften my stance on that abysmal failure of a city, you’re sadly mistake and thoroughly delusional. Detroit is a garbage pit, and, as Steve Crowder’s video illustrated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hhJ_49leBw) there are very definite and distinct reasons for it being such as it is, all of which adds up to SELF-INFLICTED WOUNDS. Locations like Campus Marchus, the CompuWare building (which really isn’t all that impressive), and the Riverfront are tiny pinpoints in a city that’s basically nothing but a burned-out ghetto. Want to see some more “real Detroit”? Watch DEA. Filmed in Detroit.
Trying to shift the blame for Detroit’s demise on people that buy cars? Asinine. If the so-called Big 3 made products that were competitive with other similar products from other car companies, backed by lower prices (which is a dig at those overpaid union thugs), they’d not be having some of these problems. Simple common sense: build a better mouse trap. Furthermore, Detroit hasn’t had more than a single car maker in decades (Ford [where your father worked] is in DEARBORN and Chrysler is in AUBURN HILLS). Nor is Detroit dependent on one business. If it was, then they wouldn’t've had use for CompuWare, would they? Detroit’s wasteful, even CRIMINAL spending (see Kilpatrick), city taxes and throughly not-worth-the-money prices on property drives business out of the city, along with their utter and complete failure to control crime (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-09-25-crime-lab_N.htm).
As for the Chrysler, don’t be so quick to say they’re paying back loans, when it’s looking like they really might not be (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503983_162-4996099-503983.html), just like GM (http://www.breitbart.tv/reasontv-did-gm-really-pay-back-its-loans-in-full/). We’ve seen no evidence of this, and, quite frankly, they shouldn’t've been given a DIME of federal money. I didn’t want to pay for either of those two losers’ failures, because they certainly wouldn’t bail me out. F*ck ‘em. When businesses fall on hard times, that’s what bankruptcy reorganization is for (and what GM filed, after receiving hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, first). That’s the nature of what is called BUSINESS. As for that dufus Marshal Mathers: if he’s such a fan of Detroit, maybe he should be living there. There is nothing beautiful about Detroit, and at least LA and NY aren’t as completely on their backs as Detroit, and have a LOT more cultural attractions. Until Detroit cleans up it’s problems of union thugs, people with handout mentalities living in the ‘entitlement state’ and liberal democrats continually driving that city into the ground, it will only get worse and worse, until it finally disappears down the black hole.
- rrrick1000
Dude…. Virus -x just destroyed you. Pssst (imagine whispering) he even hooked you up with info in the links there. By the way some of the shots in that video is not Detroit, it’s a suburb about 40 minutes outside of it. Mark Steyn rocks!
