Matthews: Can’t we just agree to stop talking about guns?

Matthews is very upset with Sarah Palin’s response and has decided that he wants us to stop talking about guns and gun metaphors in political debates when we aren’t talking about the second amendment. Even though it had nothing to do with the shooting, Matthews persists in trying to suggest that language causes violence.

This huge push to demonize language, if successful, will have consequences far beyond the political realm. I’ve been thinking all week that this is just one step away from telling preachers what they can’t say in the pulpit, all in the name of ‘crazies’. It’s one step away from preventing individuals with beliefs contrary to those of the State from expressing themselves in a public forum, all in the name of ‘crazies’.

Think about this scenario where a man hears a preacher, say from the Westboro Baptist church, who condemns homosexuality with the ‘God hates fags’ rhetoric and the man goes out and shoots a gay congressman. How do you think the Left will respond? They will say that you can’t say ‘God hates fags’ or anything like that because of all the ‘crazies’.

Demonizing language can only lead to the silencing of whatever or whoever the State disagrees with. It must be stopped or else we will lose our rights to assemble and freely speak our minds, all in the name of the ‘crazies’.
