Thankfully hotairpundit clipped 2 minutes out of the 9 minute segment so I wouldn’t have to watch the whole thing! In this clip, Matthews calls Bachmann a balloon head:
First of all she never indicated that the founders eliminated slavery in their lifetime. It might sound like she’s inferring that but anyone who has studied history even a little knows that slavery was around much longer than that. And I’m pretty sure she knows that too. What they did do, as Beck pointed out on his show this morning, was end the slave trade. They also worked toward the end of slavery even though they couldn’t abolish it which is why they instituted the 3/5ths provision in the Constitution. If slaves were counted as one whole person, then slave owners in the South would have had more representatives in Congress and slavery would have been much more difficult to abolish. It’s not because they thought that a slave had the intrinsic value of 3/5ths of a person that they wrote it that way, but because they wanted to end slavery. But Matthews’ ignorance of this is why he is a balloon head. Actually he’s a balloon head for more reasons than this, but for the sake of being civil I’ll leave it there.
