Michael Steele: You don’t have a reason to vote Republican :: UPDATE: I rescind

This is what he told a group of 200 African Americans last night at Depaul University:

Why should an African-American vote Republican?

“You really don’t have a reason to, to be honest — we haven’t done a very good job of really giving you one. True? True.”

We need to ditch this guy while we still have a chance. He’s going to kill us in November if we don’t get his mouth shut.

UPDATE: I’ve searched for either a transcript or a video, and have found nothing. Depaul, according to their website, didn’t allow any type of recording, either audio or video. I can’t imagine that someone didn’t break that rule, but there is nothing out there yet. I admit that there is little context published around his comments, and perhaps I was rash in my quick judgement. I carry what I call ‘steele baggage’ because he often has a foot-in-mouth disease that gets Republicans and the GOP in trouble in the press, as I chronicled just the other day. Dan Riehl makes a competent argument on why Steele could be right in this instance, and without more context, it’s difficult to make an effective argument that he’s done anything wrong without knowing where he ended up after these comments.

In general I believe that now is not the time to lick our wounds, after all we’ve had 3 years to do that. We know what the other side is about and we need to expose it and tell people the truth about what both we and they are about. Steele should be a GOP evangelist touting why we are right and why the Left is dead wrong. There’s no evidence that Steele didn’t accomplish this effectively based on what we know. Therefore I have decided to withhold judgement until more info is released.
