Micheletti to Zelaya and OAS: You and What Army? UPDATE: Zelaya Postpones Return to Honduras until the Weekend
Roberto Micheletti has upped the ante by stating that the only way Zelaya would return to power is through a foreign invasion:
Zelaya “has already committed crimes against the constitution and the law,” said Micheletti, a member of Zelaya’s Liberal Party who was named interim leader by Congress following the coup. “He can no longer return to the presidency of the republic unless a president from another Latin American country comes and imposes him using guns.”
The Organization of American States (OAS) had given Honduras an ultimatum stating that leaders had only three days to restore Zelaya back to power. With that tactic now stalled, Zelaya is trying to be apologetic, playing on the sympathies of the Honduran people:
“I’m not going to hold a constitutional assembly,” Zelaya said. “And if I’m offered the chance to stay in power, I won’t. I’m going to serve my four years.”
I’m sure after years of what many Hondurans describe as Zelaya trying to grab power and create a Venezuelen like state, that they know all to well that Zelaya is simply trying to get back in power to continue his attempts to overthrow the constitution.
Micheletti certainly has ‘balls’ and it’s a good thing for Honduras right now. The world needs to relent before this crisis turns into an armed conflict. If Zelaya does return Honduras in the company of world leaders and get’s arrested with guns drawn, this could give other countries the reason they want to start a war with Honduras to reimpose Zelaya.
And what will Obama say to this? As Ed Morrissey at hotair.com points out:
Barack Obama has enabled this nuttiness with his meddling on behalf of a Chavez wannabe. His State Department had better make it known that any attempt to fly Zelaya back into Honduras would be met with our displeasure, and that the issue rightly belongs with the Honduran legislature and courts. Otherwise, we’ll have a war breaking out in Latin America that we can ill afford at the moment.
UPDATE: According to Fausta:
After the OAS ultimatum, Zelaya postponed the date of his return to “the weekend,” in order to “give the diplomatic process a chance.” He didn’t specify a date but says Insulza, Correa and Fernandez are tagging along all the same. Reportedly Zelaya slept at the OAS.
But Zelaya still insists on returning which will certainly ensure his arrest. Hopefully this week the world will come to its senses and not force this issue. Obama still has a chance to change his mind, which he is well know for doing.
