Charles Krauthammer said earlier this year that if we absolutely secure the border and stop the flow of illegals into this country, then the American people would be more generous when finding a solution to deal with the 11 million illegals that are currently here, given that there would be no more illegals coming across.
And I think that’s exactly what Newt is saying here. Outside of the ‘humane’ comment at the end, it seems to me that Newt isn’t advocating for blanket amnesty, but rather an approach that evaluates those who are here with the consideration that if they’ve been a law abiding for the last 20 or more years and have a family here, then we give them the opportunity to become legal. This means that some will stay, but the rest will go.
But it must start with securing the border, completely.
