As many of you know we had problems with DISQUS and dumped it in favor of our native WordPress comment system. Things have gone very smoothly and I just want to check in with you guys to see what you think. Many of you have now used both systems and know the pros and cons of both, but here are my thoughts on them:
DISQUS
Pros: It has more features than my current system and a better design. It doesn’t reside on my server and thus can provide better performance in the future. It’s used by many blogs now which means you can seamlessly comment on all of them.
Cons: It can have technical problems as it did before we dumped it, blocking many of you from commenting until they got it fixed. Your user accounts reside with DISQUS and therefore they control them, which means I can’t create, delete, or fix your account if you have problems.
WordPress
Pros: Thanks to plugins it has most of the features DISQUS offered and a good design (something I can change if necessary). I control user accounts and therefore can better aid you if you have problems and can better prevent spam or trolls from continuing to comment. The comments load quickly and performance is good. Comment is not based on an external system and is likely to rarely have technical problems. if they do I can fix myself without waiting on someone else.
Cons: You must sign up for an account (no anon comment posting allowed by my choice) to comment here, much like you do at Hotair. It lacks a few of the features of DISQUS like realtime updating. The current design is good (I believe) and can be made better, but DISQUS has a great design which I am unable to duplicate yet.
Just some of my thoughts. But what I really want to know is what you think. Your answer in this poll will help me decide how to go forward, either keeping WordPress or switching back to DISQUS. Now that we’ve had a couple of weeks under WordPress you should be able to judge better what you prefer.
Also feel free to leave a comment with more thoughts. Also, just to point out, IntenseDebate is another comment system. I haven’t tried it yet and know nothing about it so I didn’t include in this poll. If you like it and want to leave a comment about it, please do so.
