Perry was asked about Karl Rove’s comments this morning, that his take on Social Security as a Ponzi scheme in his book will be a toxic issue for him during the campaign. Perry responded that Karl Rove has been over the top for a long time and he’s no longer responsible for Rove. He also stood firm on his comments that Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme:

Right on. It would not be fair to take Social Security away from people who have been paying into it for most of their lives but younger people cannot be promised it will be there and they should not have to pay into it anymore.

Perry has some good points , BUT , I just can’t trust a former Democrat who once supported Al Gore . But again , if Perry ( or any other Republican ) happens to become the Republican nominee for Prez , I will give him my vote . The little man-boy freak in the WH has to go .

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bill-Redder/100000544267578 Bill Redder

keep in mind perry was a conservative democrat (back when there was such a thing) and perry supported algore before gore became a bloated weather nazi.

and yes, chairman barry has got to go.

    • http://twitter.com/conservative__ conservative

I insist you take note of a hero of mine. He grew up in a small town where his father was a staunch supporter of a Democrat. In fact, his father helped run these places that gave out government jobs. But he noticed through this process the mess the government creates. Soon, he became to revolt against the establishment this president he once loved created.

And that, is Ronald Wilson Reagan.

      • Anonymous

Good point. People can and do change, and someone’s past shouldn’t necessarily condemn them forever – if it does, were all doomed. However, it’s prudent to observe another of Reagan’s maxims – “Trust But Verify”, and we should not be apologetic for doing so.

    • Anonymous

It’s sort of amusing to see “conservatives” say they won’t support Perry because he used to be a “Democrat” and he supported Al Gore.

First of all, the entire state of TEXAS used to be DEMOCRAT. Texas was a conservative state, but nevertheless TEXANS WERE DEMOCRATS.

Second of all, Perry is obviously a conservative NOW, so what difference could it possibly make whether of not he was a Democrat in the past? The point is, he became a Republican when he saw the Democratic Party move to the far left; isn’t that a sign that the man thinks for himself, and knows his principles and values? Of course it is.

But lastly, and “purists” who fear a former Democrat who became a Republican only reveal that they are so insecure about their own critical thinking skills and their own principles, that it is THEY, not Perry, who should be criticized. A man who knows his own principles and values and is secure and strong in them wouldn’t hesitate to leave a political party that changed. For that reason, I have far more respect for Rick Perry than I do his “so-called conservative” critics who think he should be condemned for having once in his lifetime been a Democrat–just like Ronald Reagan.

Get a brain. You should be GLAD former Democrats have come over to the Republican Party, not critical of it.

How dare you tell the truth, Rick Perry? Where’s the fund, Karl? Show us. Where’s the lockbox Karl, and Dick Cheney? You can’t tell the truth to the peasants, now can you?

I think most Americans respect Rick Perry’s honesty. It’s really refreshing.

I’m no perry fan but he didn’t say he was opposed to a system of social security. He said the one we have is a fraud (he said lie but I’m translating).

    And he’s right.

Palin pointed out the same (similar) thing in Iowa. When discussing Obama’s threat to withhold Social Security checks if he didn’t get his way with the debt increase debate. As she put it, “It’s their money.” But, it’s actually not there. It’s gone. To keep the appearance of the federal deficit from scaring the beejeezus out of all of us. Which it should. It might help.

    Good for Rick.

Gov Perry is 100% Right! I’m 63 and I know that SSI is a Ponzie Scheme while I was paying into it – my money was going to pay those that already retired – and my son of 40 KNOWS it’s a Ponzie Scheme that will be bankrupt by the time he retires!!

Rick Perry is an HONEST Conservative and THAT IS WHAT WE NEED, considering the Lying Thief we have in the White House!

  • Anonymous

Agreed, it is a Ponzi scheme with how it currently is being operated and used. It doesn’t matter that a lot of people are dependent on it, it is still a Ponzi scheme plain and simple. Karl Rove needs to go pull his politically correct head out of his a_s and start speaking the truth. Karl is a major weasel. Always has been and always will be.

  • Anonymous

    From Wikipedia:
A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to separate investors, not from any actual profit earned by the organization, but from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors. … The perpetuation of the returns that a Ponzi scheme advertises and pays requires an ever-increasing flow of money from investors to keep the scheme going.

To stay solvent Social Security needs more people paying into the fund than there are people taking money out. That hasn’t been happening and won’t happen anytime soon. No one under 40 can expect to receive what they’ve paid into Social Security. And requiring those people to keep on paying in when there will be NO return is nothing short of CRIMINAL.

Does anybody care what Karl Pogue says, anymore? I sure as Hell don’t. Social Security is a socialist scam, plain and simple. Its an unconstitutional hand-out program the federal government has NO BUSINESS being involved in. Money is shaken down off everyone, whether they want to be involved in this scheme, or not, and if you end up making too much money (in spite of all the other tax shakedowns), then guess what: you don’t get all that money that they took from you, for all those years, and it goes to someone else. That’s HORSE SH*T. And, really, what do you get from it, if you do get it? The maximum you can get is $2,366/month

    http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/5/~/maximum-social-security-retirement-benefit

However, that depends on how much they were able to shake you down for, and how long they were able to shake you down and skim your money off the top to pay for everyone else’s retirement. I would think it would be significantly lower, especially during times when people don’t have jobs, and retirement is damned near out of the question. Really, all you can get with some SSI checks is a bag of dog food. Retirement should be an individual responsibility, but people like the wimps on my FaceBook put up stupid things like: “you’re a Republican if you don’t care about anybody else’s welfare”. Well, I don’t care about anybody else’s welfare, because Welfare is a program that should be gone, too. Individual retirement accounts are readily available, and I’d wager that people living off those are probably doing a bit better than those living out of Uncle Sam’s pockets (which is everybody elses’ pockets). The America I grew up and fought for says you have equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. You take charge of your own retirement through your own money market accounts, your own investing, your own Roth IRAs, etc., and you decide how much you’re going to pay into it, and when you’ll pay into it. Now, in this era of Generation Y sissies, they have to have the government do everything for them, from show them how to tie their shoe, to tell them how many days/week they’ll work, and how to discipline their kids, or if they can defend their own lives and households. I have no respect for people that can’t take responsibility for their own lives and actions, and have to have Anakin Skywalker, the half-grown manchild, take them by the hand and tell them what to do. Everybody has the right to try, just as everybody has the possibility to fail.

The discussion should start now. Taking money from folks today to pay them with money to take from folks tommorrow is a Ponzi scheme. Social Security invests in nothing produces nothing but adminstration cost and survives on the fraud of promise of a payout in the future by taking money today to pay the promise of yesteryear.
Cato Instituties write up on the benifits of privatization is a must read and will help the poor.

Social security is a ponzi scheme. THERE IS NO LOCK-BOX! the money the federal government gets from social security goes straight into the general fund. the average person receives 3 times more in benefits from social security then they ever put in. Unless you’re rather wealthy and paid up there near the social security cap for all your working life, then you’ll get more back then u ever paid in. It’s just a redistribution of wealth program, from the young working people to the old retired people.

Perry is right about Social Security, but he ought to point out as well that Obama is ripping off Social Security and hastening it’s end right now with his payroll tax cut:

Effective for all of 2011, it reduces the employee portion of the Social Security tax from 6.2% to 4.2%, thus giving us a little extra spending money. And collectively, it’s more than a little: $100 billion for the year. Yes, it has raided Social Security by $100 billion. And now, they’re proposing to raid it again. But they want to include an employer portion. Combined, it would amount to $200 billion for next year. In effect, Obama is using YOUR Social Security money as a political patronage scheme to bouy up his GDP, only most of the money is going overseas because of our trade deficit. After a decade or so, it’ll be gone. China would have a quarter or more of it, and the rest would be spread around. End of story. We’d finally be rid of it.

Obama knows it’s a ponzi scheme because he knows–just like Madoff knew–that at some point, the money to keep it going would run out, and the ponzi scheme would be exposed. And, just like Madoff, Obama is hiding the truth about what he’s doing.

I remember my first pay check at 16 and I asked what is Social Security. I was told that it is money that I will pay into my whole life and it will be broke by the time I am old enough to use it. Guess what it is in the red already and I still have almost 30 more years until I retire.

By definition, that is a Ponzi Scheme.

Also, hardly anybody mentions this anymore, but the baby boomers are starting to reach retirement age, and they are a HUGE portion of the population. A lot of people are applying for it early (age 62). You get less, but it’s gonna go broke, so get some now before it does. And think how tax revenue to cover it has gone down in this endless recession.

Social Security will still be there for 25-30 year olds. The political strength behind it is overwhelming and is only getting stronger as the other forms of pension funding seem to vanish. You can call it a Ponzi scheme or a transfer payment or pension or whatever but barring nuclear war it will remain. The most likely fix is the removal of the FICA cap as was done for Medicare contributions years ago.
