Santorum said today that Romney’s Super PAC is lying about him too, suggesting that Santorum supported voting for Felons. He says that is a lie:

I did vote in the United States Senate that someone who was a felon, who served their time, came out of jail, had served their parole and probation, and after all of that sentencing, then they could go out and have their voting rights renewed. Which by the way is the exact law that’s in South Carolina.

Now Governor Romney has taken that and said ‘Rick Santorum is for felons voting.’ Now that is a lie! … And so to go out and mislead the people of South Carolina as to what our record is on this is just, YUCK!

I expect that from Barak Obama. I don’t expect that from a Republican running for president. We’re better than that!

Earlier in the day on Fox News Sunday, Santorum called on Romney to tell his Super PAC to pull the ad:

I hope Governor Romney will have his PAC take down an ad that’s running against me in South Carolina saying that I want felons to be able to vote. That’s an absolute lie, ” Santorum said in an interview with “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace. “Romney should be saying to his PAC, take that ad down, it’s false.

Romney lying? Say it ain’t so.

I Know! Fox Nation, NRO, Hot Air, Townhall and Drudge might as well find a good doctor to have their lips sewn to Romney’s ass!

      • Anonymous

Incredible!! With Obama, nobody would have predicted that he would win the nomination so early in the game. I am curious about what the GOP and these different sites drink for once. How could they have fallen for the Romney Kool-Aid? If voting for Obama in 2008 was a sign of Bush-fatigue – at least we knew the sentiment of the general electorate! But there is no excuse for the GOP and for the RINO to force Romney upon us! Are they hypnotized?? WE the PEOPLE say NO!! to Mitt-Flip-Flopping-Romney!!
Sometimes it seems as if we are watching some dark movie; who next is going to be infected by the Romney-virus and act like a zombie?
        Shame on you, GOP!

        • Anonymous

Huge mistake for the GOP because none of us will support Romney and they cannot win without us. Only now they have not only lost our votes but our respect. If they don’t nominate someone else they will be irrelevant in the future.

      • Anonymous

        Agree totally.

Can’t even watch FNC anymore. I’m completey disheartened by the so called conservatives jumping on the Romney banwagon. The GOP expects the conservatives to lock arms and sing kumbaya together ultimately. I’ve got news for them…….not a chance in he//! Sitting this one out with Romney as nominee. Let’s see how electable he is then. Hussein is a lock.

        • Anonymous

That is the word that resonates…disheartened. Did you see the latest headline on Fox Nation? “Newt get’s Cocky” with an unflattering pic of him. Where were they when a while back Romney’s people said Romney was going to win the whole thing!? Romney, of course, would never say anything himself, no, he is much too controlled. Instead he send out others to do it. I am a little surprised Huckabee is so enthralled with Romney after how Romney went after him in 08. I think I will never fully understand politics, even if I live to be 100!

      • Linky1

I’ve noticed this for quite some time. Now that Huntsman is out, his support goes to Romney. It will be very interesting to see the next candidate who withdraws…and where THEIR support will go. This is like a bad game of Survivor!!!

GOP establishment: You will do what you’re told and vote Romney or read my lips we will blame you for four more years of Obama like we shirk responsibility for HW Bush and blame Perot for his loss. It’ll be all your fault for the damage Obama does. We don’t have to motivate you by nominating a conservative because the Democrat should motivate you to vote Republican. We should not have to behave like we actually believe in small government and fiscal responsibility. So what we grew the size and scope of government and added trillions and trillions in debt on your children’s back. We give you lip service about fiscal responsibility/smaller government don’t we? And that should be enough for you. Its bad when Democrats add trillions to the debt and grow government and good when we do it.

If Romney is the nominee I will pass because he can’t be trusted appointing judges and I’d rather have gridlock as it would be more conservative by default.

      • Anonymous

If you don’t want Willard to be the nominee go out and really talk up someone else. Please do not pass, this election is to important for the country. I am not a Willard supporter and never was. I was reminded of 2008 election and just what he did to a lot of good people.

The solution to unprincipled sellouts in the GOP establishment is to not sellout to their ABO fear mongering they’re using to push Romney on us. I will not subMitt to a bunch of sellout fear monger Rovians as I understand Rove in the end is the architect of Democrat majorities and Obama as the Bushies tarnished the GOP brand so badly Republicans hardly had a chance to win in 2006 and 2008. Now many of these same sellouts who piled trillions and trillions on the backs of our children and grew government more than any since LBJ are supporting Romney because he and his PACs donated to their reelection coffers and are promising they won’t sellout conservative principles THIS TIME! My goodness I’m not going to condone with my vote that “we’ll get it right this time” BS marxist use. I will not subMitt.

          • Anonymous

I’m with you Guest1776! If Romney is forced on us I will vote in the races for the House, Senate, State and local offices and leave the vote for President blank. It has been a hard decision for me because I don’t want Obama. But holding your nose and voting for “the lesser of two evils” is STILL voting for evil. I won’t do it.

Right now the GOP is hearing, “Yes, if I have to I’ll vote for Mitt”. What they should be hearing is, “Give me someone worth voting for or I WON’T vote. Romney will be forced on us if we allow it.

By the way breaking news from FOX, Huntsman is dropping out and endorsing Romney:

            http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/01/15/huntsman-to-withdraw-from-race-for-republican-presidential-nomination/

I predicted Bachmann would drop out after Iowa, and Huntsman after NH. Perry’s next unfortunately.

            • Anonymous

I’m hoping Perry does well in S.C. and doesn’t drop out. I’m sick and tired of the RNC bosses tell me who I can vote for.

              • Anonymous

I hope he stays in as well and the other candidates should get behind Perry. I am so tired of everyone trying to tell us that Romney is the best candidate to defeat Obama but that is not true. The season has just begun and only about 2% of delegates have been awarded. Does it look tough, yes. Is it possible, yes. We need to prove the RNC bosses and the intelligentsia wrong on this or else they will keep nominating these squishy candidates.

            • Anonymous

Don’t leave it blank or somebody may fill it in for you. :o

I think Perry is toast. He is tied for last in Conservative SC with Huntsman at 5% each. >It is clear that he and his message are not acceptable to the GOP at large and the writing is on the wall. (my guess is the GOP is tired of Presidents from Texas)

He needs to get behind one of the other conservatives and get Romney out of there and put a Conservative Candidate in as the GOP nominee. Perry can be a king maker if he wants to and that will build alot of bridges for another run in 2016 or 2020. He should be thinking about that instead of what he is doing now because all he is doing now is keeping the Conservative vote split and that gives the nomination to Romney.

              • Anonymous

But what to do with Paul? Even with one conservative, he’s a problem. Do conservatives need to go after him hard now. He really jobbed Newt in IA. Payback is a b**ch.

I must admit that I am mystified by why so many in the GOP would support someone with absolute ignorant ideas on foreign policy that will in all probability lay the ground work for the next world war. I personally think if the GOP gets down to one true Conservative Romney will loose and the GOP will once again have a Conservative as the nominee not some wimpy candidate like McCain or Dole to defeat Obama.

Rick Santorum will lose this battle because as seen with Newt and Rick Perry you don’t dare question Mitt. In 2008 the other candidates did not think highly of him and this time is no different. Something must be done so Romney does not get the nomination. If this is what he does to opponents in an election what would he do with the power of the presidency?

    • Anonymous

Yes, but in 2008 didn’t Romney lose the nomination ultimately?

Romney’s Super PAC should know the difference between the words “Rick Santorum is for felons voting” and “Rick Santorum is for former felons voting.” But by the same token, Santorum should know the difference between what Romney does and what his Super PAC does. Romney has to be hands off. He can’t direct a Super PAC to do anything without breaking the law. Both of these candidates and their supporters are guilty of choosing words to their advantage at the expense of the other. But isn’t that what people do in a debate? Aren’t they both capable of setting their own record straight?

21 point lead for Romney in SC. Time for Gingrich and Perry to consider getting behind Santorum, or this will be a moderate 2008 repeat. Not that they are less capable, they just do not have the momentum to close it out. They will do better next time. Please conservatives, let’s not hand it over to a moderate over a split vote and split hairs on policy.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ajtelles Art Telles

Dittos – “… getting behind” vs. “… hand it over”

The most resilient “consistent conservative” is Santorum.

Gingrich and Perry will endorse Santorum eventually.

      Why?

Becuase Santorum has been the level headed person who is definitely the MOST “consistent” AND “conservative” opponent to the Massachusetts “moderate” Romney.

      Art

    • http://twitter.com/doorsxp Doors Xp

You’re making my point about Drudge. He’s got a headline that reads “Poll: Romney opens 21 point lead in SC…”. But what he fails to mention is that is an ONLINE poll; i.e., not statistically valid. So, no Romney probably does not lead by 21 points. Still, I agree that it is time to unite the conservative candidates against Romney in SC. I think it should be Newt since he probably has the best resources to stay in for the long haul. But I’ll take any of the three vs. Romney.

      • Anonymous

        I agree!

      • Anonymous

Yeah, unfortunately Newt is In the same boat…no momentum. Again, it isn’t that I am against the aforementioned candidates. It’s just we have a very small window to turn this race around. If a consolidation doesn’t take place almost immediately, this race is over IMO

This is a little gray since anyone who commits a felony is often referred to as a felon on going. Now I know the politically correct thing is to say they have paid their dues. But in real life job applications always have the question, Have you ever been convicted of a felony? These people are referred to as felons. So if you agree that people who committed a felony and served their time they should be able to get their voting rights back, which by the way I do, then you do want felons to be able to vote. This does not mean the same thing as “prisoners” who have committed felonies and do not have voting rights until they complete their sentences. So I think Rick is wrong on this and just needs to clarify who a felon is by definition. Not prisoners still serving time.

Romney is doing this intentionally because Santorum is dropping in the polls. By creating sympathy for Santorum he feels it will re-shift the split of the conservative vote. I am calling on Sarah Palin to Pick A Rick or GingRich – http://www.politijim.com/2012/01/why-sarah-can-still-save-gop-and.html and present a unified body to stop the man who would be the weakest candidate in the field.

God Bless you for doing that! I hope and pray that she heeds your letter. I pray she listens to her smart hubby and supports Newt. Although I would be fine with her supporting either Ricks as they are far better than Romney as well. When Bolton came out in support of Romney(I felt sick) my first thought was we need Sarah Palin to come out on our side….here is to bended knees!

    • Anonymous

I think Palin is between a rock and a hard place on this. She can’t possibly support Newt. He has too many ‘on the record’ examples of over the top liberalism. He was good as a speaker for a few years. That is pretty much it. Since then, he has continued on an incremental and largely uninterrupted path to inside the beltway, over thinking, policy wonkish, great idea guy, liberal perdition. The latest being his outrageous leftist attacks on free market capitalism and success. She can support Santorum without damaging her conservative bone fides. But she does not want to support a loser. And Romney does not, nor should he want her endorsement. I expect she will keep quiet.

Bullseye painted right on Rick’s back right now. NC television is reporting that Huntsman is dropping out of race. Gee thanks John after you’ve done so much damage already in NH! Television is also saying that he will endorse his LDS brother Mittsie. What ever happened to Huntsman saying that he was the only true conservative in the race? Now he will endorse a moderate like Romney. How do you say hypocrite in Mandarin?

Hard decision needs to be made on who will drop to have a single conservative up against Romney. Regardless, Paulites may prove to be the ultimate spoiler. Just trying to do the calculus.

    Thoughts?

Even with Huntsman in the race Romney is winning in SC, now he’s most likely to get a 5% boost. I don’t see where the other candidates (Gingrich, Santorum, or Perry) are going to get any kind of boost doing debates unless someone falls on the sword saying something really stupid or if one of them drops out, but not likely to happen.

I agree with your post and am not surprised Huntsman is endorsing Romney. However, I would add hypocrisy is now as widespread as the attacks.

Question: did you know Rick Santorum in 2002 recommended Jerry Sandusky, the accused child sex abuser of Penn State, for a Congressional Adoption award? Sandusky, even then, had been accused of 5 counts. From what I read Rick S has denied he knew of the accusations. Apparently, this news was already out but I did not know it. Could the Christian leaders have known and endorsed him anyway? Though not my candidate I was stunned to learn of this. SC voters should learn of this because I would not vote for him now if I were there.

          Steve,

      • Anonymous

        sjmom,

See timeline below. Don’t think charges were brought or that these horrible events were brought to the attention of Santorum or others outside the extended PSU family. Can you chack against your info? From this account, he would have not known anything.

A chronological look at the case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, based on a grand jury report in Pennsylvania state court. Some key dates in Penn State football history are included. Sandusky has been charged with 40 criminal counts, accusing him of serial sex abuse of minors.

        ___

1969 – Jerry Sandusky starts his coaching career at Penn State University as a defensive line coach.

1977 – Jerry Sandusky founds The Second Mile. It begins as a group foster home dedicated to helping troubled boys and grows into a charity dedicated to helping children with absent or dysfunctional families.

January 1983 – Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football’s national champion for the 1982 season.

January 1987 – Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football’s national champion for the 1986 season.

1994 – Boy known as Victim 7 in the report meets Sandusky through The Second Mile program at about the age of 10.

1994-95 – Boy known as Victim 6 meets Sandusky at a Second Mile picnic at Spring Creek Park when he is 7 or 8 years old.

1995-96 – Boy known as Victim 5, meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is 7 or 8, in second or third grade.

1996-97 – Boy known as Victim 4, at the age of 12 or 13, meets Sandusky while he is in his second year participating in The Second Mile program.

1996-98 – Victim 5 is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is 8 to 10 years old.

Jan. 1, 1998 – Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky’s wife, as a member of Sandusky’s family party for the 1998 Outback Bowl.

1998 – Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6′s mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, “I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won’t get it from you. I wish I were dead.”

Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge.

June 1999 – Sandusky retires from Penn State but still holds emeritus status.

Dec. 28, 1999 – Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky’s wife, as a member of Sandusky’s family party for the 1999 Alamo Bowl.

Summer 2000 – Boy known as Victim 3 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is between seventh and eighth grade.

Fall 2000 – A janitor named James Calhoun observes Sandusky in the showers of the Lasch Football Building with a young boy, known as Victim 8, pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. He tells other janitorial staff immediately. Fellow Office of Physical Plant employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and sees Sandusky and the boy, who he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13.

Calhoun tells other physical plant employees what he saw, including Jay Witherite, his immediate supervisor. Witherite tells him to whom he should report the incident. Calhoun was a temporary employee and never makes a report. Victim 8′s identity is unknown.

March 1, 2002 – A Penn State graduate assistant enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. In the showers, he sees a naked boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates to be 10 years old, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant tells his father immediately.

March 2, 2002 – In the morning, the graduate assistant calls Coach Joe Paterno and goes to Paterno’s home, where he reports what he has seen.

March 3, 2002 – Paterno calls Tim Curley, Penn State Athletic Director to his home the next day and reports a version of what the grad assistant had said.

March 2002 – Later in the month the graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz. The grad assistant reports what he has seen and Curley and Schultz say they will look into it.

March 27, 2002 (approximate) – The graduate assistant hears from Curley. He is told that Sandusky’s locker room keys are taken away and that the incident has been reported to The Second Mile. The graduate assistant is never questioned by university police and no other entity conducts an investigation until the graduate assistant testifies in Grand Jury in December 2010.

2005-2006 – Boy known as Victim 1 says that meets Sandusky through The Second Mile at age 11 or 12.

Spring 2007 – During the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with Victim 1 weekly, having him stay overnight at his residence in College Township, Pa.

Spring 2008 – Termination of contact with Victim 1 occurs when he is a freshman in a Clinton County high school. After the boy’s mother calls the school to report sexual assault, Sandusky is barred from the school district attended by Victim 1 from that day forward and the matter is reported to authorities as mandated by law.

Early 2009 – An investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general begins when a Clinton County, Pa. teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky has inappropriately touched him several times over a four-year period.

September 2010 – Sandusky retires from day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile, saying he wants to spend more time with family and handle personal matters.

Nov. 5, 2011 – Sandusky is arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts.

Nov. 7, 2011 – Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says Paterno is not a target of the investigation into how the school handled the accusations. But she refuses to say the same for university President Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz, who have stepped down from their positions, surrender on charges that they failed to alert police to complaints against Sandusky.

Nov. 8, 2011 – Possible ninth victim of Sandusky contacts state police as calls for ouster of Paterno and Spanier grow in state and beyond. Penn State abruptly cancels Paterno’s regular weekly press conference.

Nov. 9, 2011 – Paterno and Spanier, one of the nation’s longest-serving college presidents, are ousted, effective immediately. Earlier in the day, Paterno announced he’d retire at the end of the season. In the end, he didn’t have that choice.

I understand what you are saying but Santorum graduated from Penn State. Here is my issue; wouldn’t you check someone out before recommendation? If the school knew and they did how could have they allowed this? I don’t call Rick guilty of knowing, but showing lack of judgment in not doing research beforehand. This, along with the bowing of his knee more than once to Specter, has really turned me off to him. He’s a nice guy but not ready for the presidency. Between this and Huntsman I am thoroughly disgusted. What has the GOP given us to choose from? At least with Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich they have been totally vetted.

PS. Read a good article on Real Clear Politics by William Cohan in WaPo about Mitt. May want to check it out. Confirmed my thought process, though I have to admit being in that paper gives me pause.

You mean calling the university and asking if anything untoward was reported on the person you’re recommending? Sounds kind of revolutionary.

Regardless of PSU connection, there was a tight circle of silence around this. Trustees were not informed of anything untoward. All Santorum knew that Sandusky was a good guy running a charity for disadvantaged kids. Can’t expect him to convene a Congressional investigation if everyone was in the dark I’m absolutely convinced his hands are clean and if stated otherwise, they are manipulating the facts.

Santorum is relevent and a solid choice from this crop. Mittens knows it and is threatened. He should be scared…

Here is why Santorum is unelectable. He’s got it exactly backwards. The country needs it’s economy fixed far more importantly than the morality issues. Fixing America’s morals is a generational, decades long adventure, he should know that, but the urgency now is the economy by far.

Santorum: “What I hear all the time, even from our side of the aisle, some on the Republican side, ‘Well we need to put these social issues aside. All we need to worry about is economics, cutting taxes, cutting spending and everything will be fine,’” Santorum complained. “They don’t know America. If all you think we need to do to get this economy going and get this country on the right track is to cut government, and reduce taxes, you don’t understand America.”

“America is a moral enterprise, not an economic enterprise,” Santorum to cheers and at least one “Amen” from the South Carolina crowd.

I think that’s one of the reason his poll numbers have been declining, he’s all over the board and isn’t focusing what needs to be talked about more, the economy.

He’s a good man, but he has a limited appeal, something primary voters don’t want to hear. And ironically, he’s not as conservative as the Not Romneys think.
I think he would make a great Ambassador to the Vatican….and I’m being serious.

Lots of states have the convicted felon restriction on voting. As in if you have ever been convicted of a felony, it stays with you for life as a disqualifier to vote. I think it is an ok law. Santorum is confirming that his position is to allow convicted felons to vote after they are out of jail (and completed any residual probation stuff). That isn’t a crazy position, but I don’t share it.

Bottom line – He is 100% right we are better than that and we most certainly are better than Romney and we can DO better than Romney. There is not such thing as a conservative from Massachusetts. Anybody who thinks otherwise is totally uninformed.

I’m still slightly Newtonian, but I’d take Ron Paul in the primary. These disgusting, clannish. elitist Republicans have totally disregarded the Tea Party and have no interest in reducing government. All they talk about is entitlement. Perry and the Libertarian are at least talking about closing down useless departments. I’m ready to look anywhere else. Is there a militant branch of the Libertarians?

The first thing Romney will do in office is set up a meeting with Harry Reid. I am so angry now, I cannot picture what it will be like the night of Jan 20, 2013, if Romney is elected. I think we may do just as well with the little prince for another 4.

If I could be certain the the Republican party would be gutted I’d vote the very devil in.

If Romney is lying about Santorum I have to wonder if he is also lying to the voters about his positions.

“I [Santorum] did vote in the United States Senate that someone who was a felon, who served their time, came out of jail, had served their parole and probation, and after all of that sentencing, then they could go out and have their voting rights renewed.

…Governor Romney has taken that and said ‘Rick Santorum is for felons voting.’ ”

In the next debate Santorum should ask Romney if he is against restoring rights to those who have paid their debt to society in full.

“Nationally, an estimated 5.3 million Americans are denied the right to vote because of laws that prohibit voting by people with felony convictions.” This is the highest estimated number I have found. The lowest Total Ineligible Felon I found was 3,237,182 and it was based on http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=tp&tid=11 and http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=2239 both links are to DOJ reports.

“Number of registered voters in the U.S. is 169 million – 86 million democrat – 55 million republican – 28 million others registered.

    2010 Mid-Term voting data (Provided by http://elections.gmu.edu/Turnout_2010G.html ):
    Voting-Age Population: 235,940,406
    Total Ineligible Felon: 3,237,182
    Voting-Eligible Population: 217,342,419
    Total Turnout: 90,732,693

Extrapolated numbers based on the data gmu numbers above:
Percentage of Total Turnout of the Voting-Age Population: 39%
Percentage of Total Turnout of the Voting-Eligible: 42%

IMO, the continued disenfranchisement of convicted felons who’ve served their court imposed sentences in full is tantamount to cruel and unusual treatment. A life term of
disenfranchisement exceeds the sentence of the court and it should be rectified by the bill Santorum voted for.

Restoration of rights should be automatic upon the ex-offender’s completion of his/her sentence.

When you pay your bill in full do you still owe that company anything or did you just clear your debt?
