Predictably, the fact that the suspects are black is entirely omitted from the news clip below (even though it is mentioned in the accompanying written report, albeit in the third paragraph, not the headline). We’ve seen this happen before with the other recent teen mob incidents that have sprung up around the country (for example, see here, here, and here.) The perpetrators in those cases too were mostly, if not entirely, black – but the media has ignored the obvious common thread.
But facts are facts, and physical appearance is a critical component of crime reporting – whether the suspects in question are black, white, or whatever skin color. That’s why police employ sketch artists – to give the public an idea of what crime suspects look like, if possible. Unfortunately, the media tends to operate these days on the assumption that white people are all racist vigilantes who can’t be trusted with certain information.
