An odd comment, since to believe that rights come from government is to infer that if government says slavery is legal, it's legal.
OTOH, slavery ended because of those who believe that Gods rights apply to all, and that biblical and quranic passages on slavery had been supplanted by free markets and the need for workers to be paid rather than indentured.
Toure lives on a street where half on the street are Republicans, who he hates. Half of the Republicans are women. Toure believes Republicans are evil.
Toure hates so many of the people he walks by in every day life.

oh gosh i'm black (and i've heard of this toure guy before), everything he says absolutely sickens me.
a long time ago, you had to be a white male landowner to vote. over time gov't passed laws to change that... a long time ago, blacks in this country were slaves, then they were segregated. gov't passed laws to change that.
i don't know if toure is stupid or purposely misleading, but the government RECOGNIZED the rights of women and minorities, the government didn't CREATE them. rights don't actually COME FROM government. they come from God and his natural creation. if gov't gives rights, gov't can take them away! whoever listens to toure and believes what he says is completely clueless and misinformed and it makes me sad.

Truly horrifying. Someone needs to tell Toure that what the government giveth, the government can taketh away. Sort of like how Obama thinks freedom of religion and freedom of speech are optional.

Do some research. The liberal mantra that the Civil War was about slavery is a myth. It was about states rights. The emancipation was not proclaimed until more than a year after the War started. The South was discussing the slave question before the war started.
Don't misunderstand me, I'm 100% anti slavery. When the war started Slavery was constitutional, therefore. the war couldn't have been about slavery.

I'm not surprised to hear this come from Touré. I wouldn't be surprised to hear it come from anyone on the Left. Really, it's just total ignorance about what rights are, where they come from, and what they imply. What he thinks are rights, are actually just privileges - The latter is given and may be revoked, whereas the former belongs to the individual by default, and can only be violated by the initiation of force.
I think one problem is that people don't see any alternative between rights coming from "God" or rights coming from "Government". There is no third way, or so is widely believed. Ayn Rand showed that third way. The proof is right there in Galt's speech.
Damn this guy is stupid. Black people's rights came from government? No they come from God they were always from god it very unfortunate that for a very long time these rights weren't acknowledge in American Society.
If your rights come from the government, then you're not free. That would mean you're under a dictatorship like in Syria. There they treat the people like a herd of cattle waiting in a slaughterhouse should they speak out in disagreement.
That's the difference between living in a free country and one that's not. As individuals we all have rights ~ unfortunately, those rights don't protect you from where you're born!
Toure, Toure, Toure... don't you understand? Government is the very reason the slaves didn't have rights in the first place! When we rely on government to give us our rights, they will do with them as they see fit! Did the blacks of civil war, and the civil rights movement depend on government for their rights? NO!!! They stood up for the rights they knew they were entitled too under God and Nature's law. It is only under this premise that their movement had the power to succeed. Martin Luther King Jr said so himself:
"You know my friends, there comes a time when people get tired of being trampled by the iron feet of oppression ... If we are wrong, the Supreme Court of this nation is wrong. If we are wrong, the Constitution of the United States is wrong. And if we are wrong, God Almighty is wrong. If we are wrong, Jesus of Nazareth was merely a utopian dreamer that never came down to Earth. If we are wrong, justice is a lie, love has no meaning. And we are determined here in Montgomery to work and fight until "justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream."
He also said this in a letter:
"A just law is a manmade code that squares with the moral law or the law of God... An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law."
In this letter, King also argued that the God-given moral law that demanded equal rights for African Americans was the same God-given moral law on which America was founded.
"We will win our freedom because the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God are embodied in our echoing demands"
So Toure, even though you will likely never read this, I hope you'll come to know that your rights do indeed come from God and Nature's law as Martin Luther King Jr and Mr Ryan have declared.

So if his rights come from the government, then his rights can be taken away by the government. This is a fool talking. He has no understanding of history and where we came from so how can he know where we are going.
I know with so many comments this must have been said already so I will just reiterate.
If the government can give it to you, they can take it from you as well.
What God gives you can never be taken away, but in Toure case it can be surrendered with a smile and a welfare check.
