An odd comment, since to believe that rights come from government is to infer that if government says slavery is legal, it's legal.

OTOH, slavery ended because of those who believe that Gods rights apply to all, and that biblical and quranic passages on slavery had been supplanted by free markets and the need for workers to be paid rather than indentured.

a long time ago, you had to be a white male landowner to vote. over time gov't passed laws to change that... a long time ago, blacks in this country were slaves, then they were segregated. gov't passed laws to change that.

i don't know if toure is stupid or purposely misleading, but the government RECOGNIZED the rights of women and minorities, the government didn't CREATE them. rights don't actually COME FROM government. they come from God and his natural creation. if gov't gives rights, gov't can take them away! whoever listens to toure and believes what he says is completely clueless and misinformed and it makes me sad.

Do some research. The liberal mantra that the Civil War was about slavery is a myth. It was about states rights. The emancipation was not proclaimed until more than a year after the War started. The South was discussing the slave question before the war started.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm 100% anti slavery. When the war started Slavery was constitutional, therefore. the war couldn't have been about slavery.

I'm not surprised to hear this come from Touré. I wouldn't be surprised to hear it come from anyone on the Left. Really, it's just total ignorance about what rights are, where they come from, and what they imply. What he thinks are rights, are actually just privileges - The latter is given and may be revoked, whereas the former belongs to the individual by default, and can only be violated by the initiation of force.

I think one problem is that people don't see any alternative between rights coming from "God" or rights coming from "Government". There is no third way, or so is widely believed. Ayn Rand showed that third way. The proof is right there in Galt's speech.

When we rely on government to give us our rights, they will do with them as they see fit! Did the blacks of civil war, and the civil rights movement depend on government for their rights? NO!!! They stood up for the rights they knew they were entitled too under God and Nature's law. It is only under this premise that their movement had the power to succeed. Martin Luther King Jr said so himself:

If we are wrong, the Constitution of the United States is wrong. And if we are wrong, God Almighty is wrong. He also said this in a letter:

"A just law is a manmade code that squares with the moral law or the law of God... An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law."

In this letter, King also argued that the God-given moral law that demanded equal rights for African Americans was the same God-given moral law on which America was founded.

"We will win our freedom because the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God are embodied in our echoing demands"

So Toure, even though you will likely never read this, I hope you'll come to know that your rights do indeed come from God and Nature's law as Martin Luther King Jr and Mr Ryan have declared.
