What the GOP base wants is a good debater

I was listening to The Michael Berry Show last night (for those of you who aren’t familiar with him, he’s a Texan talk radio show host and particularly good at giving Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee a hard time) and found this segment to be spot on. Berry discusses the recent popularity of Gingrich and suggests it’s because the GOP base has set “good debate skills” as their number one criterion. This certainly explains why many recent Gingrich converts use one argument for their newfound support of Mr. Speaker – he could wipe the floor with Obama in a debate.

Berry closes by saying:

Apparently what we want in our next president is not that he be right on global warming, not that he be right on amnesty or illegal immigration, not that he be right on our core issues, not that he share our character issues, but that he be a good debater.

Of course there is a larger issue here. Despite our understanding of how the mainstream media operates, the collective base falls for their calculated distractions and imposed agendas time and time again. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that even if our eventual candidate is the best debater on the face of the planet, the mainstream media (the same one telling us we must have a solid debate contender) will declare Obama the winner, regardless of who actually wins.
