Will Newt Gingrich Lose Billionaire Donor?

Will Gingrich’s relatively poor showing yesterday result in the end of cash from his big money donor, Sheldon Adelson? CNBC’s John Harwood seems to think so:

Newt has been hounded before with rumors that he would drop out after similar results in other states, but he has stalwartly declared that he’ll stay in the race all the way to the convention in Tampa. At one point, he even accused the Romney campaign of circulating false stories that he was dropping out to hurt his fundraising.

So is Rachel Maddow playing the same game, or is he really in trouble? Keep in mind that Adelson is reported to be worth roughly $25 billion, and so his donations to Newt’s campaign are infinitesimal to him. Every $10 million dollars he gives comes to about .04% of his wealth – for comparison’s sake, that’s about $400 to someone with $100,000.

However, at this point, with Newt so low in the delegate count, likely splitting the non-Romney vote, and with the inevitable calls that have already begun for him to quit the race, a major donor fallout may just do him in despite his promises.
