Will Weatherford: The Florida legislature has NOT targeted Allen West

The other day we quoted Shark-Tank as suggesting that the Republican legislature was trying to redistrict out of existence Allen West in Florida. The man targeted in that quote was Will Weatherford, who has since released this statement saying that this is patently false, that in fact he has supported Allen West and will continue to do so:

As the House Chairman of Redistricting, I have the responsibility to ensure there is a fair, open, and legally compliant process. The newly approved constitutional amendments, passed by more than 60% of Florida voters, require the legislature to follow a set of standards. This is the first time the legislature has been required to follow these legal standards

These new standards have resulted in disrupting the current districts for incumbents. The Tampa Bay Times stated that the House, Senate, and Congressional maps represent “a record-breaking shakeup in incumbency.” It has been reported that at least 38 members of the Florida legislature do not currently live in their district.

There are rumors that the Florida Legislature has targeted Congressman Allen West. This is patently false. I personally have supported and endorsed Allen West. I will continue to support this extraordinary member of Congress who has brought a much needed conservative voice to Washington, D.C.

However, my personal support cannot and will not trump the Constitution.

Sounds about right.

OK, let me show my ignorance of American politics again, and ask, Why would West be written or forced out if Florida gained 2 more seats? I know they have to do redistricting, but… ah crap, can someone explain this all to me please? Thanks.

    • Anonymous

The population increased, but the size of the state is the same. There isn’t geographical space for the new districts without taking some space from existing districts. This means the all the districts need to be a bit smaller to accommodate the new districts.

So, it’s not that West’s congressional district is gone. It’s that it will now be different.

      • Anonymous

They’re doing the same thing here in TX to give illegals more representation.

    • Anonymous

I’m not an expert and I may get this wrong but here goes:

      1) They do a census every 10 years
      2) Political powers redistribute districts based on the census (supposedly)
      3) Redistricting is supposedly required to make things fair and balanced
      4) It can be used to tilt power from district to another
      5) In this case, they are loading traditionally demoncratic constituents into his district
      6) This will stack the deck against him come next election – fewer repubicans
      7) Why are they doing this? The census told them to 8) So it shifts the delgates from one district to another
      9) Now it’s something like 24 demoncrat vs. 25 repubican

The bottom line is that the establishment will punish those who oppose it. Allen West is an outspoken conservative and Tea Party darling, he must pay.

You got it. They think they can hide it, or we’re stupid, or maybe they think, “Who cares what the serfs think? We’ll make them slaves soon.”

This is all the reason I need not to vote for Romney. In the primary or the general. obama is not THE president and Romney will not be MY president even if he “wins”. Which he won’t. He couldn’t even if the election was going to be fair, which it won’t. holder has already taken care of that, and the senate lacked the courage to remove holder from office.

I’ve been a repub all my life, but I’m only going to stay republican as long as it takes to vote for Gingrich, if he’s still in it when it gets to my state. After that, I’m going to register as an independent.

Assuming there is any voter registration after this election. Assuming America still exists. I have the feeling that Christians, Tea Partiers, Jews, and gun owners will be registered, though. On a different sort of list.

The whigs joined the Republican party (early 1800′s if memory serves correct) and made them a definite factor in politics. There’s nothing saying that the Republican party is ordained however, and I’m just about done with them.

          • Anonymous

Me too. A vote for Newt – or Santorum, as circumstances recommend – and then I become an Independent.

          • http://no-apologies-round2.blogspot.com/ AmericanborninCanada

I have thougth for a while now- most likely since the last Presidential race, that when I become a citizen, I will register as an independent.

            • Anonymous

A lot of states do not allow Independents to vote in primaries. Might be worth checking your state.

A More practical alternative is to join the people who are reforming the Reupblican Party.

Take control and throw the establishment scoundrels out.

              • Anonymous

LOL. Not meaning to be derisive, honest. It’s just that the idea that the repub party is in the process of being reformed is so hilarious. A certain legendary hot place will freeze over first.

The repub “leadership” has been making it quite clear that they will pay any price, carry any burden, and endure any hardship, rather than allow the GOP to be reformed. (With apologies to JFK.)

Well, here in Central Florida, it is.

I joined the Orange County Republican Executive Committee 18 months ago. Very easy to do.

Since then, we Tea Party types have pretty well taken dominance in the organization. In the 2010 elections, we took out two ultra-Lib Democrats, and got them replaced with fine Republican conservatives.

At the Presidency 5 pseudo-convention last October, we overwhelmingly supported Herman Cain. Now, the support for the conservatives over the Romney faction is about 4 to 1.

Central Florida is a microcosm of the US. What happens nationwide is mirrored here. When the Dems took over nationwide, they took over here, too. In 2010 we turned things around here as was done nationwide.

The Republican Party can be conquered and the rascals *can* be turned out. We’re taking the fight up the ladder now, and we’ll be holding feet to the fire all the way to the top.

It can be done, and is easier than you might think.

                • Anonymous

“In the 2010 elections, we took out two ultra-Lib Democrats, and got them replaced with fine Republican conservatives.”

Allen West being one? And what’s happening to him now? The repub leadership farther up the ladder has noticed you, and they are beginning to dismantle your successes.

I may be wrong. Honestly, I hope I am. I hope at the end of the repub primary we have Newt or Santorum as the nominee, and Allen West as his VP. God bless you for your efforts, and please forgive me if I am discouraging you. If the Right wins, even partially, we will all owe you and those like you a huge debt of gratitude. If I’m right, at least you can say that it wasn’t your fault. You did your part.

A quote I’ve mentioned elsewhere, from Arthur Finkelstein, a repub campaign PR advisor many years ago: “The level of cynicism that I have is well founded.”

                • Anonymous

I appreciate your courtesy and consideration. Thanks.

No, Allen West was not one of the two. He’s down in the West Palm Beach/Gold Coast region 150 miles away.

We replaced Suzanne Kosmas and Alan Grayson (“Republicans just want you to DIE”).

We got Sandy Adams and Daniel Webster in their place. Hard to do much better.

After watching McCain get muscled in as the R nominee back in 2008, I spent the next 18 months working to get a third party established. Long set of stories.

My conclusion, reforming the Republican Party was a whole lot more practical than starting another political party.

It’s doable. Hard fight, to be sure, but remember, these people are politicians; they don’t like being exposed, and many of them are very fearful, and will change their positions quickly when challenged. Don’t let their image fool you.

                • Anonymous

OK. I’m paying attention to what you say. I’m glad you’re in there fighting.

SortBy: Voter registration, last primary, campaign donations
SortBy: 1040 taxable income, religious charity

I think many of us already are.

        • PFFV

I get the overwhelming feeling that the majority of the elites in Politics (on both sides) as well as The National Media think “We The People” are stupid. If they don’t listen to us in the 2012 election cycle all he!! is going to break loose. It is ‘Do or Die’ in this next election. We either save our nation or we kiss it good-bye. Those that choose Obama or Romney are complete idiots. The blind support for a man that has NEVER done anything conservative but has done many Liberal things (RomneyCare) just boggles my mind. Wake up people, our children and future generations are counting on us to preserve this nation so they have freedom and opportunities as we have had. Obama or Romney will not make Government smaller, nor will either force government to spend less. 4 more years of this continued course would mean the certain collapse of the USA, as we knew it.

          • Anonymous

            You’re right. Now or never.

        • Anonymous

          You make valid points here.

I left the repubicans after having to vote for McCain in 2008.

And the fact that Holder is allowed to stay in office after all the crap he’s done (support New Black Panthers, sue states, Fast and Furious, etc.) is beyond stupid. The fix is in I think. I’m Independent and will join the “Constitution Party” when it gets more solidified. Then I’ll proudly make “the list” and will try to do my part (again) for God and country.

The Florida redistricting was a very involved and possibly one could say a convoluted process this time.

The people voted on amendments (to the Florida constitution I think) that were almost a catch 22 situation for the legislature.

There were conferences all over the state for input and they were hilarious at times. And a web site was set up for folks to submit their own maps. CHAOS!!!

I remember much of the circus nature of it, I just wasn’t sure if I understood it all. I love being taught in Scoop school! :-D

        • Anonymous

I am not sure “understand” is a word that can be applied in this case. I watched some of the hearings on television and it (although well managed) was as I mentioned, chaos.

          It was not pretty.

That was a testament to why we should live in a representative republic and not a democracy.

The new constitutional amendment Florida approved does not allow political considerations when creating districts. It basically outlaws Gerrymandering.

      • Anonymous

That’ll be no challenge to the Democraps…they’ll just call it something else, under the principle of Redistribution of Assets.

ABC, to understand Florida voting google Florida 2000 hanging chad, dangling chad, flopping chad, bad chad, mad chad, chad or cheeze…

      Sorry bout that…

I hate to hear this about West, but he isn’t whining about it, he is getting ready to battle and he knows all about that.

Wish Lt. Colonel Allen West, the very best!!! An officer and a gentleman that knows when, where and how to tell someone to go to hell.

LOL I remember all the hanging, dangly flopping chads- that was pathetic. But thanks :-) I’m not in his district, where ever that may end up being, but I’ll support him in any way I can- even if it’s only through prayers.

Sure, it’s all a coincidence. The repukes (repub “leadership” only; I’m not referring to rank and file Republicans) are angels, and if God didn’t forbid them to, they’d show you their wings and halos.

    Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s …. a pig.

  • K-Bob

After the 2010 elections, a LOT of people went on the TeeVee and Radiah (and them blog thingies …and the tweeter) to tell us: “Hey look everyone! Republicans just gained control of a whole bunch of state houses, just in time for the post-census reapportionment! Woop Dee Frikken Doo!” (Read that in Chris Farley’s “Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker” voice.)

But so far, every single news item I’ve seen since then mentioning reapportionment seems to indicate a Republican is getting screwed out of his or her seat, or that Dems are gaining seats.

Must be those giant clown shoes every new Republican state legislator puts on. Takes a while to stop tripping over their own feet.

Hope someone can show me some good news on that front.

Poor Rush has lost it completely. He was on the radio making an attempt to connect this to Romney because, I guess, Weatherford was a surrogate for Romney at some point. As a party, we really have to stop acting like such morons in public.

    • Anonymous

What party might you be referring to?

The party that raised the debt ceiling bringing our national debt to 100% GDP? The party that let funding for Obamacare stand unopposed? The party that is sponsoring Internet censorship legislation? The party whose Speaker plays golf with a seditious lawless President? The party that abdicated its most essential Constitutional duty and gave same President carte blanche to borrow another trillion, no questions asked? The party that says nothing as the DOJ carries out illegal operations and the TSA & DHS intimidate citizens? The party that stands idly by as the Fed prints worthless money and fuels rampant inflation? The party that lets the EPA trigger crippling energy costs and crush major industries with constitutional regulations?

If that is the party you are referring to, hell yes it should stop embarrassing itself in public.

If you resided in West’s district as I do you would know the fix was in. But since you don’t I can understand how you can be so gull-i-bull.

You have no idea the BS we have had to endure in Florida district 22.

Sounds much like TX District 23!

Given what I have seen from the inside of the Republican party, I would not be surprised if they had done this. This tool was just mad that they were caught. I wouldn’t count out Col. West though, for he will probably show them wrong. Then it will hit the fan.

On a further note, the Muslim outreach coordinator at NASA said that they just took a picture of Congressman West’s new district from space. There is nothing special about the new district, as it looks like a spiral hitting every Democrat and missing all their neighbor Republicans. Just typical politics, nothing to see here, folks :)
