***UPDATED***

Dude. I’m almost speechless at this cover. This is the current Bloomberg BusinessWeek found at their flickr page, but apparently they opted not to run it. Even so, dude:

I guess that’s one way to characterize Newt’s landslide win in South Carolina.

(h/t: Andrew Kaczynski):

***

UPDATE: Apparently this wasn’t about South Carolina, but about Obama vs Romney.

Really?! I don’t find it funny at all!

      • Anonymous

        No, neither do I.

I say the same thing to you which I just said to Brian below. Don’t fall for the PC clap trap my good man. I don’t want to have to come and get you and slap you around on this. Don’t make me come down there!

          • Anonymous

Sorry, but I just find it tasteless. There are other, more eloquent ways to say he got his butt kicked. Would a picture of Newt holding up Mitts head on a stick be acceptable (or funny)? I don’t think so.

            • Anonymous

Yeah, but nobody wants to see Mitten’s bruised buttocks… I’m just sayin… ;)

            • Anonymous

Yeah! If that’s what it takes to illustrate a calamitous defeat for Newt. It’s a metaphor for defeat. Nothing more. Why so ginger all of a sudden.

Nukie.. I’m making a point here to youz guys. We are trained here to ensure that our first reaction is one of disgust and queasiness. Why? Because the political culture dictates it. Don’t dare have a normal reaction because we’ll be seen as haters, bigots, brutal and violent… and we’ll be identified for it and labelled because of it. It’s a graphic illustration of defeat for Mitt. Nothing more!

But our reactions are the result of Cultural Marxism in high mode… and we are expected to line up perfectly to prove to the politically correct dictators that we are NOT what they define us to be.

              • Anonymous

I understand your point, but to have a positive reaction toward an image that I would, in any other situation, deem less than tasteful, would be viewed as ‘hater, bigot, brutal, and violent’ (not that I particularly care what ‘they’ think). No need to be graphic, that’s all.

I saw a post below that suggested a road runner/wiley coyote cartoon. Now, that might have had posibilities.

                • Anonymous

Graphic… that it is. But I’m not convinced that the shocked reaction reflects what’s really going on. But I’ve explained that already, so I won’t beat a dead democrat donkey.

Gosh you guys are tough! Gang up on me and beat me up why doncha? Oops! Tickle me maybe then.

                • Anonymous

                  …beat a dead democrat donkey…‘ Las

Now I think you’re latching onto a photo idea :0

                • Anonymous

For me, this is not much different than a political cartoon in the paper or jibjab animation online. My first reaction was to be impressed by the technology to pull it off. Then I felt the humor behind the image. But with all political images, some people will be more sensitive to it than others. These guys verbally beat the crap out of each other every day. I find many of the political ads to be more distasteful than this image.

                • Anonymous

Jimmy… thank goodness, a lone supporter of my argument. Your reaction to the portrayal (whatever the reasons were for the graphic) is what I believe to be a natural one. And that would be, “Wow! Romney got pretty beat up in SC!”

              • Anonymous

You drink too much of your own kool-aide.. I think many of us are very well aware of the PC culture and abhor it and still find this crass and tasteless. I know Self-Respect and Respect have gone out with Gen X,Y, and Z, but this is crap.. online or not.

                • Anonymous

Please enlighten me. What’s my kool-aide?

                • Anonymous

Just kidding, btw. I don’t think you drink the wacky stuff (real kool-aid, i don’t know).

              • Anonymous

“to ensure that our first reaction is one of disgust and queasiness. Why? Because the political culture dictates it” ?????? That makes no logical sense.

My first reaction is disgust period, and it has nothing to do with “political culture.” It has to do with not allowing my mind to become jaded and numb from displays of violence.

If they had used a cartoon-like drawing, then that would be a metaphor, not showing one presidential candidate all bloodied… which is pretty darn close to a veiled threat against a candidate’s life.

Now the Business Week cover was more subtle and showed three different faces, which made it look more like a metaphor. Still using their actual faces goes too far…

                • Anonymous

Because the political culture dictates it” ?????? That makes no logical sense.

Then you know very little about how the culture is being shaped. I’ll reference you to some sources if you are interested.

There is no doubt the cover is brutal, but it was not only Romney portrayed beaten but also Obama, Newt and Paul… so all received equal treatment… not just one.

It’s your prerogative to disagree, but I maintain that there is indeed a contrived outrage over things that far overtake the intended significance of the thing causing the outrage. And I maintain that the culture has been so shaped to cause knee jerk shock over things that in years past were simply seen for what they were.

A perfect example is the “crosshair” targeting of blue states… which was the cause of the calumny against Sarah Palin blaming her for the Giffords shooting. That was the liberal/dem version. Conservatives have their version of fake outrage as well so they can show the politically correct how much they too reject violence.

It’s almost irrelevant what the intended reason for the graphic portrayal. The fact is people, quite naturally, thought it had to do with Romney’s defeat in SC.

which is pretty darn close to a veiled threat against a candidate’s life.

Now this statement of yours is proving my point. In what normal time, in what normal era would this have been construed as a veiled threat? To use this bogus “veiled threat” nonsense proves that our reactions are shaped by what we think others would have us say.

So to repeat… yes it’s brutal when seeing it… no doubt. My wider point is that the outrage is exaggerated and overblown, and I’m saying that the outrage is a manifestation of our cultural conditioning.

You obviously believe otherwise, my opinion is that the reactions come from another source.

                • Anonymous

I accept your premise and your explanation, but not your conclusion. I agree that we are keyed up to be offended. No offense to the great work at Scoop, but a lot of that kind of thing gets spread here as well.

However, I think that this portrayal is over the top and beyond the standards for good taste. A black eye would have been acceptable. Him bruised and bloodied is too much.

                • Anonymous

Was it over the top? Arguably it was. These kind of things take on a whole other dimension when political correctness steps in to arbitrate outcomes for what is acceptable and what is not and keys us up to be offended.

                • Anonymous

That’s the point where I disagree with you on this. I am not offended because of political correctness. I am offended by the image of a bloodied and bruised man being placed on a cover. If it was a photo of a violent crime, I would have a similar reaction, though in this case it was a photographic assault. The fact that it’s political does, I agree, change the tone and meaning.

                • Anonymous

“in years past were simply seen for what they were.”
In years past, the ethical and moral foundation of our country was still intact and this cover would not have even been thought of or created, much less rejected.

I can agree the current lemming mindset is keyed up to be offended by everything… or to wait on the media to tell us what to think.

A black eye would have sufficed as a metaphor.

Lucky Strike Commercials used to use a black eye in their ad campaigns back in the 60′s.

                • Anonymous

Totally agree. A black eye would have sufficed and would not have been offensive. If you see my post below, by the way, Bloomberg didn’t reject it on the basis of ethics, but in favor of a different story. So…what is wrong with their moral compasses over there?

                • Anonymous

“A perfect example is the “cross-hair” targeting of blue states… which was the cause of the calumny against Sarah Palin blaming her for the Giffords shooting.”

Blaming Sarah Palin for Gifford’s shooting was idiotic.

However if a different icon could have been used… My personal curiosity is in learning who actually chose the icon. Where has it been used as a neutral meaning icon before? but that’s another story.

        Nor I…

        • Anonymous

I won’t fall for the cultural marxist requirement to go all austere and solemn and to protest over some bogus outrage. The cover’s brilliant and sums up what happened in SC. It’s a hyperbolic, but effective, representation of what happened.

I for one am beginning to pull back from checking my PC meter to ascertain what’s acceptable and what’s not. In fact… I’m letting the batteries run low on my PC meter deliberately.

It’s shocking, but there’s nothing wrong with the cover.

Brian… what’s happened to you fella?

          • Anonymous

Oooh, I don’t like that. It shivers me timbers. I don’t want him hurt in any way. There are many other ways to show him but this is yucky.

It is effective though, I just don’t like looking at it. I would prefer a cartoon like the roadrunner and coyoteeeeeee, *puff of smoke*. I feel sorry for him in some ways. He’s a persistent little cuss.

            • Anonymous

I don’t want him hurt in any way.

You are making my point for me. Why are you thinking that people want him hurt “in any way”. This is exactly what I’m talking about… it’s a metaphor for his defeat. Gosh… have people so fallen off the turnip cart! We’ve let the cultural marxists define our reactions, and we dutifully fall for it.

When I see that graphic I don’t sit there and think, “gee… that’s brutal! I certainly don’t want Mitt hurt” But that’s the reaction our politically correct/cultural marxist betters demand from us.

Man! Have we ever fallen down the rabbit hole. It’s a graphic representation of what happened to Mitt politically. Nothing more.

Now don’t make me come and get you… I swear I will. Don’t wimp out on me.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1396855720 Brian Jones

I just don’t find it tasteful. If there’s one thing I try to be consistent about, it’s honor and integrity. Whether the ad is arguing in my favor or not, I cannot support it if it is tasteless, which this was. There were other ways to get this message across.

And to be honest, I don’t like the perception of violence at all. It really gets to me. That’s not to say I can’t BE violent, but this wasn’t a time for that imagery. It’s almost like talking about someone behind their back. How do you think Mittens’ children or wives felt when they woke up and saw this picture. Probably a little bit frightened (not too bad though). I just think this went too far, that’s all.

            • Anonymous

How do you think Mittens’ children or wives felt when they woke up and saw this picture.

              Very good point for sure.

But I do see things differently from the perspective of the rough and tumble of politics and don’t take this sort of thing too seriously.

Anyway thanks Brian… I’ve got bruises all over me now. Nuff sed.

Agreed… about the reason… it was drawn up even before the debate. There are other covers of all three beaten and bruised.

The point still stands… and it came out after the SC debate… and people took it to be directly related inspite of it’s original intent… the connection was made immediately to the debate.

Now I’ll address you other post.

Do you think they decided not to publish it since Gifford’s announcement has been in the news lately and since she will be Obama’s State of the Union address. Remember Obama told “us” to tone down the rhetoric which he’ll probably repeat since Giffords will be at his State of the Union.
